Permanent Account Number (PAN) is unique to each individual and acts as a code of identification of Indians, especially those who pay income tax. It is a 10-characters alpha-numeric identifier issued to all judicial entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act of 1961. It also serves as an important proof of identification and is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department. The PAN is a must for a majority of financial transactions such as opening a bank account, receiving taxable salary or professional fees, sale or purchase of goods above specified limits etc.

It is also issued to foreign nationals unlike Aadhaar Card and Driving License and hence, it is not an acceptable proof of Indian citizenship. Due to its significance more and more people are getting PAN Card made and it is mandatory of tax payers and to get income tax returns. It is valid for the life time but it is issued only once. However, duplicate PAN card can be procured in the case of loss and damage.

How to apply for PAN Card?

Applying for PAN Card is quite easy and hassle-free and can be done online. One has to pay Rs. 105 if the communication address is in India and Rs. 971 if the communication address is outside India. Payment can be done via both online and offline modes. Documents of proof of address, proof of identity and date of birth are necessary while applying for PAN Card. One can apply at both NSDL and UTI online portals for PAN Card.

How to apply for PAN Card at UTI?

Follow the steps mentioned below to apply for PAN Card at UTI online portal.

A page will be displayed where you will see the Form 49A.

In the field of “status of the applicant” select the appropriate option from the drop-down menu.

Now start filling up the form. Make sure you fill the form correctly otherwise corrections would have to be made later.

After completing the form click on “Validation” to check the form. If the form is filled correctly move further to make the payment by clicking on “make payment”.

Once you get the success message after submitting the form, take out the print of the form.

Paste two passport size photos on the form. Make sure the photographs are signed across.

Also, sign on the allotted spaces on both the pages of the form.

Now send the form along with proof of identity, address, and date of birth to the nearest UTI office.

How to apply for PAN Card at NSDL?

Follow the steps mentioned below to apply for PAN Card at NSDL online portal.

Click on the link given to reach the NSDL portal https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/form49A.html

A page will open with form 49A on it.

Read the instructions given carefully before you start filling the form.

At the bottom of the page select the category of the applicant.

Now start filling in the form. Make sure you fill the form correctly otherwise corrections would have to be made later.

After filling the form click on “Confirm”.

After this, a page will be displayed with payment terms and conditions. Click on “Agree” and proceed with the payment.

After the payment has been completed successfully, you will get acknowledgment form with a 15-digit number.

Take a print out of this page and sign it.

You can complete the payment by sending a DD or enclosing a cheque with the form.

Send the form with documents of proof identity, address, and date of birth.

Envelop should mention ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN – ______________’. Fill in your 15 digit acknowledgment number in the blank.

Send it to Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Ltd., 5thFloor, Mantri Sterling, Plot no. 341, Survey no. is 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bangalow Chowk, Pune – 411016.
