3.2 Thrifty Ideas: Dollar Tree Crafts – Rain Chain

Try a cute, colorful, and useful tutorial with directions for a “rain chain” made from inexpensive supplies from the Dollar Tree (or similar stores)—or you may already have the needed items! This plastic-cup substitute for a downspout is both clever and decorative. It is simple enough for older children to do with adult supervision. The website has a handy drop-down menu under “Find Projects” with categories such as “Kids Crafts,” “Parties,” “Printables,” and more.

3.5 Arts and Crafts: Polymer Clay Erasers Video Tutorial

Using specialty polymer clay, a high school girl demonstrates shapes and techniques to make really cute erasers. Figures include pastries, a bunny and bear, and a smiling cloud; other pieces are made using silicone molds. Older elementary-age children will probably be able to do this craft with a little demonstration or assistance (particularly with the craft knife) using whatever modelling clay you have; but, only the special media will make erasers (the demonstrator gives the source for eraser clay).

3.8 Gardening: Winter Vegetable Garden – It’s Not Too Late!

If you have found yourself envious of the neighbor’s tomato and pepper harvest this summer, it’s not too late to plant! You may have to come up with a cold frame to protect your plants (Internet searches for DIY cold frames have cheaper options to build from salvaged materials or ones just for this season). Check with your local garden center for starter plants at this point and you can still put food on the table yourself! The article has more advice.
