Saturday October 12, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, October 18; Saturday, October 19; Friday, October 25; Saturday, October 26; Friday, November 1; Saturday, November 2; all of which run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Cost (daytime activities): $7.50/person (over age three; under age three is free). Cost (evening activities): $5/person (over age three; under age three is free). Cost does not include concessions, available from numerous vendors; feel free to bring your own picnic lunch. Field- or group-trips can be scheduled during the week Tuesday through Thursday by appointment; contact auburnleafarms@yahoo.com; cost will be $5/person. This is a working farm, so be sure to wear shoes and clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Consider dressing in layers as fall weather in Virginia can be unpredictable. This is a fun fall event for your entire family that you won’t want to miss; bring your friends too! No alcohol or tobacco products allowed on the property. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted, but due to rough terrain, it may be difficult to maneuver them around the farm.
Auburnlea Farms’ first-ever Farm Fall Festival is run by the owners, homeschooling family Rick and Becky Bennett and children. Daytime activities on Fridays and Saturdays (October 4 through November 2) will include down-home farm fun like a three-acre, a no-spray corn maze; a no-spray pumpkin patch; the Auburnlea Concession Barn featuring Auburnlea-raised, no-MSG, no-soy, nitrate- and nitrite-free, no-cornfed, pastured pork bratwursts, and apple cider funnel cakes; hay rides; pedal tractor track and mini-farm; giant 40-plus foot slide; farm animals; scheduled farm tours; corn cannons; picnic areas; and free play areas including pumpkin checkers; corn hole; large ball volleyball (farm style!); pitcher pump duck races; mind-bender walk-through puzzles; and more! Evening activities will include Mazes by Night (bring a flashlight) and Glow in the Dark Fun.
Spectactular Saturdays
October 19 – will feature barn-less dances on the pasture with live music by the McKenzies, who will show us how and call the steps so the whole family can enjoy traditional group reels, square, and contra dances.
Outdoor Movie Nights
October 12 and October 26 – bring a blanket for a hayride to the back pasture for an old classic movie, suitable for all ages! Visit the Auburnlea Concession Barn on your way for a bag of freshly popped organic popcorn and a Boylan soda to enjoy during the movie.

Historic Food Ways
Saturday, October 19 – Step back in time to the 1880′s with Rachel Deddens, Lynchburg’s very own culinary historian. Rachel loves cooking using the hearth, open fire, coal, and ash, and enjoys educating the public too. Watch and learn while delicious smells fill the air. She’ll prepare wholesome stew on the open fire and have bowls of her delicious comfort food available for purchase. While you savor the delicious stew, browse through the tents of other local, heritage crafters including a tinsmith and weaver.
Armed Forces Day
October 26. Honor the men and women who sacrifice so much to defend America’s liberty and freedom. Look forward to friendly competition between branches of the military in farm-style relays and games! Those who have served or are currently serving will be admitted free of charge, and are encouraged to come in uniform. Civilians, don’t forget to wear red, white, and blue!

2.2 Upward Basketball and Cheerleading League – Richmond – Best Price by October 27

Saturday, November 2, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for evaluations (take about 30 minutes); practices and games begin in January 2013 for an eight-week season. Cost before October 27: $85 early registration fee per participant for basketball (boys and girls grades one through six), or cheerleading (boys and girls in kindergarten through grade six). Cost on or after October 27: $95 per child. Cost includes cheer skort, cheer top, mock turtleneck, megaphone, pom-poms, hair ribbon, individual awards after each practice and game, an end-of-the-year award, and more. For basketball, cost includes uniforms, t-shirt, individual awards after each practice and game, an end-of-the-year award, and more. Registration is open now; find the forms online or at the church. Registration ends November 2.
Richmond’s First Baptist Church will host Upward Basketball and Cheerleading to give children and their families a positive sports experience, and to promote salvation, character, and sportsmanship to all who participate. There are separate basketball leagues for boys and girls. The season will incorporate one-hour practices, one-hour games, devotions, and a celebration at season’s end. The emphasis is on skill development and spiritual growth. Children are guaranteed equal playing time and equal teams. To ensure the teams are balanced, basketball participants are individually evaluated and placed on teams according to their skill level.

2.3 Free Resources for International Day of Prayer (for Persecuted Church) – Worldwide – November 3
Open Doors is one of several missions groups publicizing the annual International Day of Prayer (for the Persecuted Church), or IDOP. As time is getting short, you may wish to download the free resources from the Open Doors website and share it with your church, homeschool group (older, prepared students), or other prayer group. In addition to prayer guides, there are videos, bulletin inserts for church, sermon outlines and aid ideas. What better time to raise $5 or $6 to send a Bible overseas to a persecuted brother or sister?

2.4 Bland Music Scholarship – Competitions Begin in January 2014
The Bland Music Scholarship is a series of progressive vocal and instrumental music contests sponsored by the Lions of Virginia; local winners advance to compete at additional levels. It is open to students in middle or high school grades who live or attend school in Virginia. Deadlines vary by location; entry-level contests will be held throughout the state in January and February 2014. Six vocal and six instrumental finalists will compete in the final state-level competition in May, in Bristol, Virginia, for scholarships totaling $18,000. Entrants will need a memorized piece of music not exceeding eight minutes in length. Homeschoolers have placed very well in recent years.
