Paul Dickson, author of more than 45 non-fiction books on a variety of topics from ice cream to American language to baseball, will give a one-hour talk for listeners age eight and up. He will sign his books afterwards. His book, Words from the White House, is a book on coined phrases and words from past presidents.

What’s Behind the Door?

Enjoy a one-hour white-glove tour and look behind furniture doors to see objects that are usually hidden away. Peek into the tall case clock, the side board, and other cupboards to view the collection’s pieces.
Colonial Family Camp
Friday, October 11, at 6 p.m. to Sunday, October 13 at noon. Cost: $100/person (ages six and up, please). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Camp requires attendance at a planning meeting on Wednesday, September 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Travel back to rural Virginia in 1780 and immerse yourself in the daily life of colonial America. Sleep outdoors, wear 18th-century-style clothes, cook your meals over an open fire. Act as an apprentice and learn a trade; at day’s end, play games of the period, sing songs, and step a dance.

2.4 Rock Climbing for Children with Autism – Midlothian – Begins October 3 then Open Enrollment

Thursday, October 3, 2013, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This start date repeats Monday, October 7, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and ongoing enrollment. Cost: $100/student/four-week session; ages Pre-K-adult. Cost covers admission, all needed gear, and staffing.
Reach is a new program at Peak Experiences designed to teach children with autism how to rock climb. Through climbing, they will gain confidence and be challenged to think about new ways to move. Climbing gets kids moving and builds strong muscles just like other sports, but can be done at an individualized pace. Your child will work with his own climbing mentor. Mentors are strong, passionate climbers who also have a passion for working with kids. They have received special training from Cornerstone Therapy Associates, who specialize in working with children on the Autism Spectrum.

Child care is not provided, but babies and children are welcome with their parents. Sessions given by the Maxwell young people are great for teens plus children of any age who are able to sit quietly. The content in sessions is appropriate for even younger children.

2.6 Free Speech Essay Contest – Deadline Is January 1, 2014
Contest deadline is January 1, 2014. Open to high school juniors and seniors for the 2013–2014 school year who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The essay contest is sponsored by Foundation for the Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).
Answer the essay question, “Why is free speech important at our nation’s colleges and universities?” Using examples from both videos (available at the website), discuss how censorship of student speech is incompatible with higher education. Submit an essay between 800 and 1,000 words on the topic.
One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize, and three $1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best essays. Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing.

2.7 Conditions of a Free Society Essay Competition and The Liberty Guide Website – Deadline Is January 10, 2014
Contest deadline is January 10, 2014. The Douglas B. Rogers Conditions of a Free Society Essay Competition is open to full-time undergrads in the US and Canada.
The competition is to encourage undergrads to discuss themes of Western Civilization such as individual freedom, limited constitutional government, free market economics, and the philosophical and moral foundations of America and the West. This year students are asked to address those themes in connection with the following quotation from Isaiah Berlin: “But to manipulate men, to propel them towards goals which you–the social reformer–see, but they may not, is to deny their human essence, to treat them as objects without wills of their own, and therefore to degrade them.” Essays should be a minimum of 2,500 words (no maximum length). Submissions should be sent in Microsoft Word format to marybeth.mcconahey@email.stvincent.edu. See last year’s winning essays on the website.
The first place winner will receive $2,000 and an invitation to attend a March, 2014 awards dinner. Second and third place winners will receive invitations to the awards dinner and $1,000 and $500 respectively.
