This enriching educational event presents an opportunity for students to explore the rich history that defines Polegreen–from its dissenter religious roots and trailblazing historical figures to its Civil War experience and contemporary preservation initiatives. The free, two-hour program includes an interactive guided tour of the site, sketching with provided sketchbooks, and a lively performance by a Patrick Henry interpreter. Picnic tables are available for use following the program if participants would like to bring a picnic lunch.

1.2 Campaign Internships – Statewide – Until the Election
The Ken Cuccinelli campaign offers unpaid internships for older students or homeschool families who wish to assist and learn. Letters of recognition or recommendation go with students when they work with staff learning and applying what they learn about civics and government. 1.3 The Cashore Marionettes – Richmond – Begins October 2

Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. See the website for other performances; student matinees will be presented Wednesday through Friday, October 2 through 11. Cost: $10/person (age five and over; group size of 15 or more people); $15/person (group size fewer than 15 people). The program is recommended for children ages five and over.
The Cashore Marionettes describes their performance as a celebration of life. The program is made up of “a collection of engaging pieces encompassing a broad range of themes…this world-renowned marionette company will entertain audiences of all ages.”
Simple Gifts is a series of scenes from everyday life set to music by Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven, and Copland. Through a combination of puppet manipulation, music, theatrical illusion, and artistic insight, the original vignettes present characters with a range of emotions produced by engineering marvels. Parents can preview the subjects and music at the second website to determine its suitability for them.

1.6 Museum of the Confederacy Civil War Medicine Homeschool Day Richmond – Register by October 11

Wednesday, October 16, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Specify the morning session (10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.) or afternoon session (1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.) when you register. Cost: $5/adult, student (ages 5 through 18); children 5 and under who are not yet official students are free. The cost includes a guided museum tour, hands-on Civil War medicine program, craft, and museum admission. Space is limited; register by 5 p.m. on October 11.
At the Civil War Medicine Homeschool Day, students will discover why disease was the number one killer of Civil War soldiers and learn about different treatments for different wounds. Learn about medicine during the Civil War and participate in a mock amputation! Students will have the opportunity to serve as assistant surgeons, wounded soldiers, and amputees.

1.7 Field Trip Ideas: Grocery Stores
The Field Trip Factory website has information on many different possible outings your support group, a group of homeschooling families gathered just for the event, or sometimes even just your family could arrange. The website describes various locations that will open up for instructive tours, among them are GIANT and Martin’s grocery stores.
