Welcome to Best Life Ever, the podcast bringing you tips, tricks and resources to help you lead a healthier, happier life!

We’re Julie and Heather. Julie writes about food, recipes and appreciating the little things in life on Savvy Eats.  Heather manages the community site Healthy Living Blogs, and writes about her personal life on Then Heather Said.  We work together on the Healthy Living Summit. Welcome to our podcast!

First things first, a 30 day PUSH challenge update!

Heather says it changed her life – it gave her new perspective on how much she’s doing during the week, changed the way she writes to-do lists and gave her a boost of confidence in reaching for her big goals.

Here’s the link if you want to take the 30-day challenge.

Now, since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, we’re talking about cheap or free dates and social outings with friends.

Heather keeps two date night jars – one with date ideas under $2, and one with date ideas that are a little pricier.

She also likes to go to the bar for one drink and a game of pool, browsing at the library or bookstore, or listening to a podcast while completing a puzzle. And then there’s the Dollar Store game!

Dan and Julie play board games.  All of the board games, all of the time, both at home and at the Enchanted Badger. Sometimes there is frozen yogurt involved, too.

Julie also likes making a big travel mug of tea and going on a long walk with Dan and their dog, Max.  Great conversations always ensue.  She and Dan also go wine tasting and antique-store browsing!

Cassie had the brilliant idea of making 12 months of date nights as a holiday gift, and we think it would be a great Valentine’s Day, birthday or future holiday gift as well! The bookstore scavenger hunt is particularly brilliant.

Julie and Dan are celebrating their 10,000th days this year! If you are in your 27th year, look up when your 10,000th day will be for a fun little celebration!

And what about friend dates?

Julie has weekly craft nights with her friend. Sometimes they craft, sometimes they can or cook, and sometimes they just watch a movie while knitting or chatting. They are also planning a chili cook-off for all their friends in the next few months.

Heather suggests a craft supply exchange. Gather up the supplies you no longer need or want, swap with friends, and come up with a fun craft on the spot!

And in the warmer months, try going to a minor league baseball game. They are a lot cheaper than the major league version, but just as much fun.

Flavor It

Because Valentine’s Day is this week, we’re pairing things with chocolate!

When it comes to savory, chocolate and chili is a winning combination. Try some Cincinnati chili or mole!

Julie also wants to try cooking chicken or other poultry in a chocolate-orange-chili combination.

When it comes to sweet, Heather leans towards the chocolate toffee bars. Julie likes different flavors with different types of chocolate – Meyer lemons and candied ginger with white chocolate, hazelnut with milk, and orange or ginger with dark.

And chocolate + cherries is always delicious!

Organize It

Time to get your DVDs organized!

Go through your DVDs and get rid of anything you don’t need. Either mail them to friends (everyone loves mail!) or donate or sell them.  Sort the remainder by TV shows and movie, then alphabetize them or put them in some sort of order that will make it easy for you to see what you have. Julie recommend using these sleeves and a basket because it consolidates everything and gets rid of all those bulky cases.

Keep your DVDs close to the TV and DVD player so they don’t stray too far, and it is easier to put things away!

What We’re Watching

Julie is loving her Veronica Mars rewatch.  Immediately after recording this episode, Julie and Heather proceeded to watch 20 episodes from Season 1 over the course of a weekend. So fair to say, Heather is watching this one too – she doesn’t even feel the need to multitask when it is on!

Julie is also loving the Flavor Bible book, which she won from a giveaway on Rachel Cooks.

Looking for a new podcast to listen to? Both Julie and Heather recommend Extra Hot Great!

Heather is watching @midnight, a late-night show with a game show-like setting that recaps everything that happened on the internet that day. Why is Julie not watching this already?

The Little Things

This is the first episode Julie and Heather have recorded in the same place, rather than over video chat. There was a lot of laughter going on, as evidenced by the photo at the top of the show notes!

Heather is also the Duchess of the Syracuse train station. Either she is visiting Julie more often than we realized, or nobody else is checking in at the train station…

Julie got 6″ cut off her hair, and is feeling a lot better about wearing her hair down (and it looks so much nicer now!).

So that’s a wrap! Follow us on Twitter and Instagram, and chat with us using the #bestlifepodcast hashtag.  We want to get to know you!  Here’s some conversation starters:

How are you organizing your DVDs?

What flavors do you pair with chocolate? Any savory chocolate recipes you want to recommend to us?

What are you watching/reading/listening to (other than Best Life Ever, of course!)?

What little things are making you happy this week?
