Bacteria and viruses in the middle ear are the main culprits for ear infections, which are more common in kids. Ear infections are typically accompanied by earache, weakened hearing, diarrhea, headache, fluid drainage from the ear, vomiting, poor sleep quality, high fever etc.
These are the best natural remedies to treat ear infection successfully:
1# Salt
The most available natural remedy for ear infections is salt.
What you do is heat up one cup of salt on a pan over low heat for a few minutes. You can also heat it in a microwave or double-boiler. Put the hot salt on a cloth and hold it against your ear for 5 to 10 minutes.
Do the treatment as many times as necessary throughout the day. The heat is highly efficient in removing fluid from the ear and reducing swelling and pain.
Alternatively, use a cup of rice instead of salt.
2# Garlic
Garlic is commonly used for pain relief. It’s also beneficial for treatment of ear infections.
Cook two garlic cloves in 2 tablespoons of sesame oil or mustard oil until it turns brownish then strain. This is how you make garlic oil. When it cools a bit, drip 2-4 drops of this oil in the infected ear. Another option is to boil 2-3 fresh garlic cloves in water for 5 minutes then crush them and mix with some salt. Put the mixture in a clean cloth and apply it against the affected ear.
Increasing your raw garlic intake is also beneficial for fighting viral infections.
3# Basil
Not only does basil reduce infections, but it also alleviates pain.
First, extract the juice from 5 fresh basil leaves then apply a few drops of the juice around the ear. Make sure it doesn’t get inside your ear.
Alternatively, mix a few drops of holy basil oil with an equal amount of some carrier oil, like coconut oil. Gently wipe just inside the ear, around the outer edge and behind the ear using a cotton ball soaked in the mixture. Do the treatment twice a day.
4# Apple cider vinegar
Fungal ear infections are best treated with apple cider vinegar.
For this, mix equal ratio of apple cider vinegar and water or alcohol then soak a cotton ball in it. Slightly insert the cotton ball in your ear and let it act for 5 minutes.
After taking the cotton ball out, lay down on the side of the infected ear to enable the liquid drain from the ear.
5# Olive oil
Earwax can block the Eustachian tubes and olive oil is the best natural remedy for this.
First warm some olive oil then drip a few drops into the infected ear. This will soften the wax thus easing its removal. Mustard oil can be used in the same way.
6# Water
Heat is highly efficient in relieving earache and preventing microbial growth.
Simply place a bottle of warm water or heating pad against the infected ear. A warm compress can also be used. Alternatively, dip a clean washcloth in lukewarm water, remove the excess water and then apply the washcloth on aching ear.
Don’t go over the board with this heat treatment. Start with five minutes then make a break before you repeat it.
7# Onion
Aside from cooking, onion is extremely beneficial for relieving symptoms of ear infections as well.
Heat a chopped onion in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. When it cools, strain out the onion juice. Drip 1-2 drops of the juice in the painful ear. Let it act for a while before you turn your head and let it drain out of your ear.
Alternatively, bake an onion for half an hour then cut it into halves. Put one half in a thick cotton cloth and apply this over the infected ear. Let it act for 5 minutes. 10 minutes later repeat the process.
8# Tea tree
This natural remedy provides immediate pain relief.
Mix 3 drops of tea tree oil, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of colloidal silver and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Warm the mixture a little bit, but don’t boil.
Apply a few drops of the mixture in the infected ear. Leave it to act for 5 minutes. Then lay on the side of your infected ear so that the mixture completely drains out of your ear.
Do the treatment 2-3 times a day for two days.
9# Mango leaf extract
Last, but not least, mango leaf extract can also alleviate the symptoms of ear infections.
Extract some mango leaf juice by crushing or grinding 2-3 soft mango leaves. Warm the juice a bit.
Drip 2-3 drops of this juice into the infected ear. Use a dropper for this. The pain will subside in a few minutes.
To fully eliminate the infection, repeat the treatment 2-3 times a day.
Although these natural remedies are highly beneficial for treatment of minor ear infections, if the symptoms continue, it’s best to consult a physician.
