When drugs and alcohol have been ruling your daily life, and it is time to stop using, how do you do it?

Here are 5 ways to jumpstart sobriety that actually build upon one another so you are working toward a new happy and healthy life without substances.

1. Detoxification

First enroll in a detox program at a facility that medically monitors all clients. The best way to get sober is to get all of the harmful chemicals out of your system. The withdrawal process from most drugs, including alcohol, is unpleasant and can be fatal if not appropriately treated.

You can jumpstart your sobriety, and recovery, by first detoxing from all drugs.

2. 12 Step Involvement/Sober Community

Attending any 12-Step meetings will expose you to a whole group of people who are just like you. Maybe for the first time in your life, you can be a part of a community who really understands you and what you have been going through. You do not have to be alone, and with the formation of a solid sober community, you are jumpstarting your sobriety, plus setting yourself up for sustained recovery.

No matter what you drug of choice, or behavior of choice, there is a 12-Step population for you. Anything from Cocaine Anonymous to Overeaters Anonymous, and everything in between, is available to anyone trying to stay clean and sober.

3. Formal Treatment

Participating in a residential inpatient rehab program is proven to be the most successful way for drug addicts and alcoholics to stop using. If you are currently covered by a health insurance plan, a large portion of your treatment can be covered. Your health is most important, and formal treatment is the best way to jumpstart long-term sobriety.

In rehab you will learn tools to cope with difficult life situations; you will be working with highly trained staff to identify your triggers and cravings; you will have peers to give and receive feedback with; and you will be safe in a secure environment without exposure to any substances.

4. Continued Care

After detox and treatment, with your newly established 12-Step involvement, each day is actually a new opportunity to jumpstart your sobriety. While being drug free does get easier, the choice to not use is one you must continue to make every day of your life.

Continued care programs are offered at most rehab centers, and there are activities and groups you can join as ongoing reminders of why you are not using.

5. Soul Search/Goal Setting

As you gain more and more sober time, and you are jumpstarting your sobriety each day, you will have the opportunity, and clear brain, to figure out who you are and how you want your life to look.

When you get to know yourself, without judgment, and you can set goals for yourself, you are well on your way to a good life in recovery.

What do you want? Who do you want to be? What would make you happy each day?
