The Vampire Diaries spoilers give a strong hint of Nina Dobrev coming back to the series as Elena. Producer Julie Plec is openly dropping hints but she has yet to confirm any such development.
Meanwhile, fans found Dobrev herself is very keen to come back to the series. If she does come back, it would mean a major change in plot.
Dobrev’s character Elena’s romance with Damon Salvatore is likely to be rekindled. Damon and Elena’s chemistry lit up the screens and was much loved by fans.
In case the makers choose to bring her back for the season finale, it could boost the television ratings in a big way.

A logistics issue?
While Plec refused to give details, she did hint at the possibility of Dobrev’s return being more of a logistics issue. However she also said it would be bad for a show to fall prey to such issue.
The Vampire Diaries spoilers: Why fans believe Dobrev will come back?
As the series races towards its finale, there are many characters who have been killed off. This has further fueled rumors that Dobrev could be coming back. Those who are still a part of the show shared their opinions on characters being written off over the last few seasons.
Somerhalder revealed that Sheriff Forbes was a tough death to witness, reports HOF Mag. Similarly the characters of Vicky and the actor Kayla Ewell’s role was also written off from the show.
Another reason to believe that Dobrev will be back is that the makers would want to bring all stories to an end. As of now, there is a lot of ambiguity regarding Elena’s character. Is Elena dead or is she just sleeping indefinitely?
If she is sleeping, when will she get up and what about the love that she had for Damon? The makers are likely to answer these questions in the final run of the series.
