Having low iron levels in your body that is caused by decrease in red blood cells is a condition named iron deficiency anemia.  What is needed for the red blood cells to carry oxygen to all tissues in the body is hemoglobin, and the body will be unable to produce hemoglobin if there is a lack of iron.

Everyone can have this condition, but some people are more prone to it than others. Since meat is the best source of iron, the vegetarians are more prone to this condition. Since during the menstrual period women lose blood then are also at a bigger risk. Since the blood donors are giving too much of their stores they are also at an increased risk of developing this condition.

Here are the 10 most common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia:

1. Having cold feet and hands is indicator that your body lacks iron and that you should increase the intake of iron. More layers won’t help you to make your toes and fingers warm because the problem is from the inside.

2. Chest pain is another indicator for this condition, but since chest pain is a symptom for many different conditions, you should immediately seek medical help.

3. Increased heartbeat is also a symptom of iron deficiency anemia because the heart works harder in supplying the oxygen to the cells.

4. Weak, brittle nails are indicator for iron deficiency. In fact any kind of nutrient deficiency is affecting the nails so if you have healthy and strong nails then that is an indicator that you have proper nutrition.

5. Shortness of breath, especially if this happens when you are doing your everyday activities such as climbing the stairs, and if that happens very often, then it is indicator for anemia and in this cause cardio workout is recommended.

6. What can be an indicator that there is something bad going on in your body are unusual cravings, and it means that you lack certain nutrient. Your body is trying to tell you that needs more iron if you craving for ice or chalk.

7. What is also a sign of iron deficiency is restless leg syndrome. RLS is really annoying and uncomfortable feeling that is characterized with crawling and tingling in the butt of legs.

8. Weakness and/or fatigue or to be more specific low energy levels, muscle weakness or fatigue without any explanation and they are not going away for a longer period of time even if you sleep and rest enough it is indicator that you lack iron.

9. Getting infections very often is indicator for iron deficiency anemia and the cause of that is low hemoglobin level.

10. Light-headedness, dizziness or headache, especially if it is upon standing is a sign of iron deficiency. You will lack oxygen when there is iron deficiency anemia and since the blood pressure drops when we stand up and because you already lack oxygen it will lead to light-headedness, dizziness or headache.

The solution to this problem is of course healthy and well balanced diet because that will help you to prevent any kind of nutrient deficiency. But if you already got the iron deficiency anemia then you should add foods that are rich in iron. For example you can add: eggs, leafy greens, milk, bread, meat, fish and iron-fortified cereals. You can also take supplements, but remember that you should first consult with your doctor.
