Diarmait Grogan & William Hamilton at The MART Gallery

Jun 26, 2015 01:14 pm

Shanghai Ritual

7th – 12th July | Opening Reception: 6.00pm – 8.30pm Sunday, 5th July

The MART, 190a Rathmines Rd, Rathmines, Dublin

Opening hours: Tues – Sun, 1 – 6pm

Irish artists Diarmait Grogan and William Hamilton spent a year in Shanghai, culminating in a shared photographic portrayal of the city. Shanghai Ritual is an atmospheric study of place and displacement, set in the largest city proper in the world in 2013.

These images present an imaginary city, the combined impressions of two artists who sought to consolidate their conflicting senses of disconnection and empathy while living abroad. Ultimately, it is a tribute to a vibrant city, caught between times, that will soon be changed forever.

With thanks to Laois County Council.

Christiane Peschek at The Copper House Gallery

Jun 26, 2015 12:24 pm

13 Kinder

4 – 31 July | Opening: 4 July at 8pm

The Copper House Gallery, St Kevin’s Cottages, Synge Street, Dublin 8

Christiane’s 13 Kinder explores the captivating process of self-projection as seen through the eyes of German and Austrian children, aged between 4 to 10.

Christiane Peschek worked with these children for several months, using the question “How do you want to be when you can become whatever is in your mind?” as a starting point. Their responses were represented through visual language, breaking the restraints of the written word, to better realise a child’s view of the world and their position within it. The work looks at the link between the memory and legacy of the past, the interpretation of the present and the possibility and desire for the future.

PhotoIreland 2015: Dominic Hawgood at the Oonagh Young Gallery

Jun 26, 2015 12:21 pm

Under the Influence

3 – 31 July | Opening: 2 July at 6pm

Oonagh Young Gallery, 1 James Joyce Street, Liberty Corner, Dublin 1

Hawgood’s practice combines photography, moving image, CGI and lighting design, and explores the aesthetic crossovers between advertising, art and technology. His award winning series Under the Influence, examines the use of exorcism within London based African evangelical churches, and the merchandising of these contemporary rituals. The enigmatic experience of seeing deliverance first hand becomes the inspiration for a series that engages with topics about authenticity, desire, and the real.

Hawgood’s technical proficiency and clarity of vision extend beyond the picture plane into the gallery itself, creating an immersive experience similar to current installation art practices. The staging of this work in Oonagh Young Gallery, a dedicated contemporary art space, serves to underline this link with contemporary art.

This multidisciplinary approach to photography represents an exciting departure with a practice rooted in traditional methodology yet conspicuous in its technological and conceptual rigor. Through this series of works and their structured presentation, an inherent ambiguity is highlighted. What is real? Is it fact or fiction we are witnessing? With an eye for detail, every aspect of Hawgood’s work has been thoroughly considered

‘Instinct’ | Group Exhibition of Irish Artists at Los Angeles Center for Digital Art Gallery

Jul 04, 2015 01:25 pm

Curated by Matthew Nevin of MART.

11 July – 29 August | Opening: 11 July at 6pm

LACDA, 104 East Fourth Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013, USA.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 12-5

Artists exhibiting in LACDA – Los Angeles Center for Digital Art Gallery: Dominic Thorpe, Liam O’Callaghan, Margaret O’Brien, Katherine Nolan, Terence Erraught, Eleanor Lawler, Francis Fay.

MART curator Matthew Nevin has invited 18 emerging and established Irish visual artists and designers to take part in ‘Instinct’ a cross disciplinary exhibition showcasing work in three Los Angeles galleries: Santa Monica Art Studios Gallery, The Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and Hive Gallery and one Irish The MART Gallery during July & August 2015.

“My recent curatorial research has brought my attention to artworks created through various creative processes. By engaging with artists that are responding to the idea of instinctual and personal artistic representation and production I wish to open up perhaps sometimes a confrontational visual argument with the viewer. I have collated a series of artworks that question the role of instinctual art production. These artists strive to develop their ideas through experimentation and use of formal creative training. The exhibition focuses on the process of visual art making and design in order to achieve a collective approach in analysing the current formation of art; its patterns, imagery, performative practices and digital responses artists are making.” – Curator Matthew Nevin

The exhibition aims to celebrate and build a greater international awareness and appreciation of Irish visual art and design excellence. By building the profiles internationally it aims to begin a foundation for future development, exposure and opportunities of Irish Designers & Artists working in California and the wider USA. After the American leg a selection of works will go on to be exhibited in The MART Gallery, Dublin.
