A new project initiated by the owners of the Hazelwood estate in Sligo caught my eye this week. This ambitious project uses the ‘vast red-brick factory built by an Italian textile firm in 1969′ as the scene for large scale artistic works. From the Irish Times;
The buildings clash, but when they visited Hazelwood last winter the Raethornes came up with a vision to make companion pieces out of them. They plan to transform the factory into a whiskey distillery and are hosting the estate’s first art exhibition,Magnetism. The distillery and the ongoing exhibitions will, in theory, help to meet the financial demands of restoring the house to its original splendour.
We do see ourselves as custodians of the house now and want to revive it and bring people back into it.

Alexandr Mir-Plane Landing is a vast helium balloon shaped like a jet aeroplane and suspended above ground, in a perpetual state of landing.
One of the most striking pieces is by artist Lucy Andrews;
Lucy Andrews, the Dublin-based artist, saw reams and reams of videotape left scattered on the factory floor since the last occupant, the Korean firm Saehan Media, vacated the building. Andrews spread the lengths of tape across the factory floor and then painstakingly threaded them together and suspended them from ceiling to floor, so that they hang in front of visitors when they walk into that section of the factory. The effect is like seeing an ethereal, endless tree trunk.
“Big reels of videotape are called pancakes, which was news to us,” says Vaari Claffey, the curator of the exhibition. “They are extraordinarily long, and when Lucy saw them, that was that. It was incredibly demanding work. Each pancake is 5,000m long. So very labour intensive, with cherry pickers at the top of the building to hang them from the roof. All of this is unrecorded tape. It fans out with the wind, so it moves, and when the natural light changes it glitters and changes. Lucy has an incredible mind for material. It is all based on how things behave.”
But you’ll have to visit the show to see that work. The exhibition Magnetism is at the Hazelwood estate until September 27th.

The Irish Georgian Society is delighted to host the Kildare Biennale. This collection of fine art is a celebration of visual artists associated with County Kildare. This exhibition came about as a result of the curator’s teaching practice. Most students seemed totally unaware of the caliber of artists living and working in their local community. To address this issue, Maebh O’Regan, a lecturer in visual culture in the National College of Art and Design, began to make a series of studio visits to Kildare-related artists, choosing individuals that excelled in different disciplines. This resulted in her book: Studio Secrets, Art in Kildare, published by Castletown Press, 2014. Leixlip Community Library invited the author to hold an exhibition of the participating artists for the launch of her book on Culture Night (19th September 2014). The popularity of the show prompted Kildare Arts and Services to invite the Curator to move the exhibition to the Riverbank Centre from the 15th of November to the 22nd December 2014.

Steambox – the Research Centre for Studies in Technological and Experimental Arts at IMOCA, School Street, Dublin 8 presents Forms of Complicity, a solo exhibition by James Gilna. The featured work is taken from his Sphere Series and includes paintings on paper and large linen canvasses accompanied by artist’s books.
Gilna constructs material images, using raw pigment, marble dust, china clay and casein. This is pure image making free of oppositional critique and at once showing a high degree of historical awareness together with an intuitive response to digital culture and molecular aesthetics. Each piece presents a moment in time, a fragmentary representation of Brownian motion, recalling Lucretius’ ‘On the Nature of Things’.

Leading Limerick painter Clare Hartigan’s solo exhibition entitled Time will be opened by City Arts Officer Ray Yeates at Duke Street Gallery on Thursday July 16th from 5pm – 8pm.
Hartigan uses her own unique style of painting to create an emotionally evocative series of works that portray our knowledge and understanding of the human condition. Hartigan uses a free and seemingly spontaneous method of paint application which reflects a paint-dripping technique made famous by Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock. This technique creates a dynamic mood in her work, combining delicate line and colour with an intense sense of speed and motion. Using these elements as a framework for her exhibition, Hartigan has created a new series of works which aim to examine the qualities of time we experience as human beings. The paintings each display an aspect of what we understand as time. From a fleeting moment, to a psychological progression through time. This is an exhibition that denotes the human condition in flux.
Hartigan’s has established herself as a highly collectable artist and well sought after at home and abroad. This exhibition will run until 31st July 2015.

Sumud // Steadfastedness brings together three photographic projects about Gaza. Six children who witnessed massacres during Israel’s 2008 bombardment were tutored by Belgian photographer Asmaa Seba El Mourabiti. The result is Gaza Seen By Its Children, 24 photographs that have been shown around the world. Beside this is Obliterated Families by Anne Paq, whose subject is the extraordinary statistic that in the 2014 Israeli offensive, 142 families in Gaza lost three or more members. Finally, Fatin Al Tamimi has documented acts of solidarity with Palestine in Ireland. Sumud // Steadfastedness is part of PalFest Ireland, an arts festival run by Irish artists in support of Palestine.Admission is free and all are welcome.

These images present an imaginary city, the combined impressions of two artists who sought to consolidate their conflicting senses of disconnection and empathy while living abroad. Ultimately, it is a tribute to a vibrant city, caught between times, that will soon be changed forever.

VAI member David Blackmore is currently exhibiting ‘Jacked’ (2014) as part of ‘Kontrat: for it had turned to gold in his hand’ at The Art Foundation, Athens.
The group show kontrat?: for it had turned to gold in his hand, explores the politics of working for the arts, through the work of seven artists, along with an interactive archive room. Informed by the Greek myth in which Midas, picks an apple and to his discomfort it turns into gold leaving him hungry – kontrat? tells the story of the art workers and their artworks.
Measuring work in a post-Fordist ‘art-factory’ scenario can be slippery, as production of labour is inseparable from activity itself. Art work is integrated in a system designed to produce blockbuster exhibitions by circulating digital and printed press releases, and dealing cultural assets, dependent on the artist’s level of ‘achievements’ listed in a 100-word bio written by a no-more-than-ten-quid-a-day-travel-expenses-paid intern. What is the functionality of working for systems designed to blur work and non-work time, and where are the less visible sides of the art workers’ discontinuous and complex biography? Account books, P45’s, freelance tax returns, payslips, and copyright policies. What contract has the employee of culture signed, and with whom?
The exhibition vocalizes the artworkers’ socio-economical bond with the ‘art factory’, and resonates a collective multitude of critical voices questioning whether given infrastructures indeed have no alternative.

“My recent curatorial research has brought my attention to artworks created through various creative processes. I have collated a series of artworks that question the role of instinctual art production. These artists strive to develop their ideas through experimentation and use of formal creative training. A series of new works especially made for Ulilinn including the premiere of significant new film work Silver House, which was made on location in Goleen, West Cork in Spring 2015. This work features a collaboration with composer Susan Stenger who has incorporated the sounds of the West Cork landscape and the house where the work was filmed to create a new audio composition. Silver House is set in the home of Eilish Lavelle who has created a unique environment, where she designed and modified her house and garden over a forty-year period. Gannon has responded to the changing natural light within the gallery to create three large sculptural drawings which occupy the double height gallery wall and interacts with the light and shadows of the space.

Paddy D’Arcy’s work seeks to convey subjective moments of heightened perception, degrees of alternate cognitive experience and encounters with the metaphysical and unknown. Utilizing skills from both traditional and contemporary eras, and merging them with aspects of street art, his paintings are created through a morphing of acrylics, aerosols and oils. He juxtaposes figurative and organic forms in landscapes and spaces that resemble reality closely but where spatial relationships and patterns take on new, enhanced dimensions and heightened forms. Annes exhibition is a collection of contemporary art. The brush strokes are broad & loose and there is a use of strong colour. Anne has no formal training or experience of painting. So her paintings are out of focus & raw. But yet they are honest. Annes art is inspired by memories and everyday life. Anne has a real passion for music & she almost feels her art glites with her music. Anne also feels her pictures have soul and therefore she feels there is soul in her paintings. Anne has 2 sons, Bill, 19 & and Micheal, 15.
After a massive stroke in 2004 & the break up of her marriage, she now resides in Killeline Nursing Home Newcastlewest, Co Limerick. According to Anne the stroke devastated her physically & was trapped in a body that would not co-operate. After some years, she regained movement in her left hand. And painting became her silent voice. She now paints with her left hand, but was right handed before the stroke. Anne would like people to see beyond her physical challenges, and see how her emotions are captured in her pictures.

PURE – Protecting Uplands and Rural Environment – A multi-media exhibition

The exhibition will feature environmental animations, 7 music videos, a short film on the community/environmental initiative and short films on illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin uplands.
The exhibition also includes the first public screening of ‘Pure Wisdom’. This short documentary is a selection of interviews with junior and senior classes, 4 to 6 year olds, from Kilcommon National School, Tinahely.
The children voice their opinions and thoughts regarding the environment, illegal dumping, litter, nature and more. The film is insightful, enlightening, often humorous and full of wisdom.

Meath County Council Arts Office is delighted to present Not only of the Sea an exhibition of work by Ciara Foster in the Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne Library & Cultural Centre, Ashbourne, Co. Meath. The exhibition will be opened by Councillor Alan Tobin at 7pm on Tuesday July 7th 2015. All welcome.
Ciara uses a variety of mixed media techniques to create texture and interest in her paintings. She has always been inspired by her natural environment and the creatures she finds in it.
The work in this exhibition is as much about the sky, which is vast, never ending, and ever changing, as it is about the seagulls who inhabit it. It is a place where they can float motionless in mid-air catching wind currents and performing air acrobatics. The clouds are never static, it’s the one landscape that will change constantly in a short space of time.

Orla Barry’s practice explores symbolism through nature and animals. She works with acrylic paints and paper on canvas. Orla Barry combines images with pattern; contrasting bright and dark colours with metallic hues. Specific images are chosen for their representational significance. Orla Barry’s work exists in juxtaposition to modern life and consumption. It embraces the beauty of the natural world expressing its atmosphere of magic and enchantment while drawing influence from sacred art, mysticism, surrealism and fairytales.
Inspiration for this exhibition has come from a recent residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. The fairytale aspect of the centre’s building and interiors and surrounding scenery appealed to Barry’s style of work and resonate with the essence of her paintings as their own individual mystical worlds.

Martin Healy works primarily with the mediums of film and photography. His work references the alternate histories and speculative futures described in late 19th and early 20th century science fiction which in many ways have prefigured the current realities of environmental crisis and the depletion of resources. Ruminating on the point where fact and fiction have coalesced, the work considers the multiple conflicts and consequences of the human desire to harness the physical world.

An art exhibition featuring the best of printmaking by artists living and working in Ireland, will be open to the Public, as part of the Galway International Arts Festival 2015.
Professor David Ferry is the adjudicator and curator for Impressions 2015. Ferry’s work is held in many international and museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, amongst others.
Established in 1988, ‘Impressions’ is the first, and longest running, Open Print exhibition in Ireland, and for the past 25 years has highlighted the amount of activity in, and enthusiasm for, this artform. The exhibition, of more than 185 new works, hopes to stimulate and engage a wider audience for this method of art making, and to create a greater awareness of the historical and cultural specifics of printmaking. The format of Impressions 2015 had been extended to include the use of print in other art mediums such as textiles, sculpture and installation art where its use highlights the importance of print in the production of contemporary art. There will be a number of prizes awarded on the night.

Responding to the imagined ‘recall’ of an idea or a situation, Product Recall strives to eviscerate the meaning of the displaced, misfiring ‘product’; whether real or imagined, and explore the credo of material culture (gone bad).
Prompted by the protocols adopted by global conglomerations to retrieve products that could maim or even kill the consumer, Product Recall invites four artists to respond to the implications of the necessity to rescind an invitation to consume, buy, assimilate or adopt.
The predominately new work shown in this exhibition spans installation, video, paintings, drawings and performance, each in its own way considering the implications of a system gone askew, where accepted norms break down, transform and reorder themselves into that which may no longer function as initially intended. The collective ideations around the temporal world challenge the viewer to confront their own relationship with the object- product, the apparent crux of 21st century Western society.
Damien Flood is a painter based in Dublin. Using the notion of defunct belief systems he endeavours to look at the world anew and question the mundane and everyday around us. His paintings often have an unfinished, ephemeral quality. The body of work he has made for Product Recall is partly informed by a recent residency in Dubai, UAE, a glittering city created in the desert by the country’s ruling class.
Swedish artist Veronica Forsgren is also resident in Dublin. For this exhibition she explores the influential writings of Philip K. Dick, specifically his futuristic tale of off-the-shelf ‘experiences’ that can be bought and downloaded into the human brain (We Can Remember it for You Wholesale), on which the 1990 film Total Recall is based. Forsgren aims to create socially engaging pieces that encourage the audience to slow down and reflect, a tactic she refers to as “soft activism”.
American artist Sarah Baker lives in London, where her practice engages investigates interpersonal relationships between different castes of society, through scripted storytelling in video and images. Her protagonists are often gold diggers who have clambered to the highest echelons of the privileged classes. The iconic status of olfactive luxury, or perfume, is her focus here, with both the objectification of the scent bottle and the power of perfume explored through drawings, photography and a performative lecture.
Belfast-born artist Tom Watt deals with altering the existing architecture of a space, or temporarily assigning it a new function. For Product Recall he repurposes the first floor gallery of Galway Arts Centre, creating a vast ramp that bisects the space, creating a ‘negative space’ beneath, a potential site for a cache of recalled objects.

Site Where a Future Never Took Place

The Ballina Arts Centre presents a series of new works by Amanda Rice which focuses on the remains of Western Hats Ltd (1942-81) an Irish Textile industry in the west of Ireland. Established at a time of social and political turmoil in Europe this industry provided refuge to European Jewish exiles in the roles of ‘technical textile experts’ at Western Hats and otherwise provided vast employment in times of austerity in the west of Ireland.
The show includes a new video work and a series of artefacts or remains, particularity relating to the materiality of the site which have been gathered by either former employees of this industry or by the artist herself. . The presented objects seek to question the nature of what constitutes value or the worth of an archival status. The somewhat incomplete collection of objects, constructions and video seeks to transmit the site in a fragmentary way evoking the present-ness of the site’s current condition.
