The Importance of a Healthy Diet

Diet is a particular pattern of eating and a balanced diet provides the correct amount of all nutrients to maintain good health.

The Role of a Healthy Diet

Health: Many studies have shown that the diet is important in the prevention of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and cataracts.  Studies from the USA have shown that individuals who have improved their diet have dramatically reduced their chances of developing those diseases.

Energy: The energy to do daily activities comes from diet. The amount of energy depends on what we eat in terms of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Carbohydrates provide the most energy and they can be stored as glucose in the blood or glycogen in the muscles. Energy is one of the reasons why it is important to consume carbohydrates in your diet.

Dietary advice: Eat five fruit and vegetables a day. Consider portion sizes. Reduce intake of fats and sugar. Use good cooking methods such as grilling and steaming.

International Day 2015 is just around the corner! On the 27th of March from 4:00-8:00 pm at FunStart all parents, students and HeadStart will enjoy a wonderful afternoon of multi-cultural activities, food, performances and much more. This is a parent generated event so it’s time to meet with families of the same nationality and get organised. Here are some suggestions of ways that you can participate:

Prepare a short (or long) performance from your country.

Organise a display with pictures and facts about the country you come from.

Make a small buffet of local delicacies that participants can taste.

Organise traditional games or activities that visitors can join.

Should you have further questions or requests please do not hesitate to contact Miki Edouard at miki@headstartphuket.com. I would be glad to help you get organsed.

Year 7 Barge Trip News by Rebecca Nicol

On the 20th of February, fifteen Year 7 students and two teachers embarked on a memorable journey up the Chao Praya river to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya. First we flew to Bangkok and were met at the airport by three lovely instructors – Lynda, Emily and Tee – who took us to a beautiful nature reserve called the Green Lung. Here the students learnt how to make Thai sweets and Incense before boarding the barge on the Chao Praya River. On board the vessel, the students were given learning journals, placed into barge crews and took turns cooking, cleaning, inventing games and designing pages in the vessel’s journal. In addition, students were required to conduct investigations and play a wide variety of educational games whilst on board the barge. On the 21st of February, students visited the island of Ko Kret where they were required to ask locals all about daily life on the island. Some were even lucky enough to be shown how to make pottery and they got to keep the objects they created! After this, the students played more educational games, conducted investigations, and swam in the river. On the 22nd of February, we arrived in Ayutthaya and explored some of the ancient ruins. The students were then required to write stories and draw sketches of the temples. After this, we visited a Chinese temple before returning home to Phuket. Overall, It was a very rewarding and worthwhile experience as the students were able to learn all about environmental sustainability and the history of Ayutthaya, develop teamwork and communication skills, break out of their comfort zones and learn things about themselves.  Therefore, I would definitely recommend for this trip to continue in the future. However, in spite of this, we arrived home on Sunday at approximately 7:30pm and the students were required to be at school the next day. I believe that we should have returned home on Saturday so that we could all have a rest before returning to school on Monday.

Year 8 Trip to St. Stephen’s Outdoor Adventure by Tonya Armenakis

Year 8 students had a blast. We went hiking in the Khao Yai National Forest, a huge rainforest that is one of the biggest National Parks in all of Thailand. We also went on a night safari, rock climbing, kayaking, ziplining, and ended the trip on the elephant conservation where we made paper out of elephant dung and learned about the elephants. Great trip, enjoy the pics.

Year 9 Trip to Kanchanaburi—WW2 War Trailby Patrick Brown

On Wednesday 28th February Khru Dia and I set off with the Year 9 pupils from school at 6am for a flight to Bangkok and from there a bus to Kanchanaburi.

On arrival at Kanchanaburi and after a stop for lunch we visited the famous bridge over the river Kwai, built for the Japanese Army by British and Australian prisoners of war along with labourers from Thailand and other parts of Asia.

Students had an opportunity to exercise their artistic skills and sketch the bridge from the river bank.

We then visited the railway museum where we learned more about the building of the railway and the harsh conditions prisoners had to endure.

We stayed at a very relaxing and peaceful resort near the historic sites and in the  evenings all took part in various team building exercises, one of which was to produce popcorn armed only with tin foil and candles.

This seemed like an impossible task. I and Khru Dia only produced 2 pieces of popcorn but after some ingenious planning some groups were far more successful.

On day 2 we all took a ride on the death railway ,which took us through some beautiful scenery, and visited Hellfire Pass, which gave us a better perspective on the work involved in building the railway.

On Friday morning before our return flight to Phuket we visited and paid our respects at the cemetery for the Prisoners of War who died while working on the railway.

The trip was educational and thought provoking for students and staff alike enabling us to see World history from a different perspective and see some spectacular countryside.

Year 7A Slavery Assembly by Hayley Milner, Year 7A teacher

Year 7A’s assembly showcased a touching, poignant and at times humorous performance based around the concept of human rights, slavery and racism. They performed stories from different time periods and from different parts of the world. They even performed their own poetry, songs and movement to communicate that everyone deserves to have a voice and we all deserve freedom.

Let’s Eat Healthy Column by Coach Steve

In the PE Department Mr. Small and I have made juicing a part of our daily health and fitness routines.

Juicing allows a cheap and convenient way to increase your daily servings of fruit and vegetables that are so essential in supplying your body with the micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes and anti-oxidants) essential for good health and wellbeing.

The following is the fundamental basic juice I use most mornings and is a good basic juice with alkalizing and anti-inflammatory properties:

2 Large Cucumbers   (Macro, Tesco, Big C)

1 – 2 stalks of Celery  (available at Macro)

4 – 6 leaves of Kale     (Makro in big packs)

1 Carrot

Optional Additions:

1 Apple (kale provides a bitter taste and I find the Carrot enough to sweeten the juice but my daughter adds an apple)

1 small knob of ginger (experiment with this as it can be over powering)

1 Teaspoon of Spirulina (I buy organic from a body building shop and 300 baht lasts me about a month)

- Ref Source: Vegetarian Health Institute of America

Next week I will have another juice and provide you with my basic smoothie recipe which often makes a great breakfast

Happy Juicing!

Year 1 House Swimming Gala

Following in the footsteps of the Yellow Cheetahs who won the Yr2 gala, the Yr1s swam with great determination and managed to win the Yr1 event as well but this time by only 2pts. It was a really enjoyable gala for them all and it certainly shows that their swimming ability is improving.
