Truly Amazing!, February 22, 2013

This review is from: Logitech UE 9000 Wireless Headphones (Electronics)

I’ll start off by saying I’m somewhat of a headphones collector. I have numerous ear buds and some Sony noise cancelling headphones. I also have some Bose ear buds, Shure 510 ear buds, and have owned Bose QC15.

The UE9000 are clearly better than any of these. The detail is just amazing. Once you turn on noise cancelling the built in will just impress the heck out of you. If you want to leave off noise cancelling you should put a good headphone amp on these but still you can get quite good sound from any wired device.

Bluetooth performance is very impressive. Sounds just as good as wired to me. These are the first headphones I’ve had where I can actually tell the difference between lossless and a good MP3. The 3D imaging in some songs is just amazing. As I mentioned in my UE6000 review, Kiss From a Rose by Seal is particularly impressive. You can hear 3-4 distinct voices plus various instruments all coming from clearly different positions. Even with my equalizer flat the sound is quite good and clear.

Gaming is also quite good on these as you might expect. I’m using them with a X-Fi HD USB sound card with THX surround set at 15% and the directional sound is extremely good.

If you don’t need Bluetooth the UE6000 are a LOT cheaper, are foldable, and to me they sound just as good. Also note that you can find the UE9000 much cheaper at other sites.

Good with some nuances., December 15, 2013

This review is from: Logitech UE 9000 Wireless Headphones (Electronics)

I’ve read a lot of reviews on the UE9000s before asking for them as a Birthday present. I’ve seen the good and the bad. Now, after receiving them as a gift and using them for several days I have a real solid formulated opinion. I feel that I owe anyone that reads this some quick background so you can clearly understand my point of reference. POR means everything in reviews.

First, I have tons of earphones and headphones. Second, my wife and I are both general aviation pilots and we own some of the best active noise reduction (ANR) technology available. I have Lightspeed Zulu 2 noise canceling headphones and she flies with Bose A20 noise canceling headphones (proven to be the best ANR headphones in the world, period). Both have BT pairing for calls and music. The reason for this info is that we understand how world class ANR works. Ultra high end aviation headsets have unbeatable noise cancelation and sound quality.

Second, I like Logitech and Ultimate Ears. I have a pair of UE500s as a beat around set, a pair of UE600s and now a pair of UE9000s to add to my collection of Bose OE2 and other earphones.

On to the UE9000s. For all the nay sayers, you have to remember that Logitech was real early in this space-Bluetooth, Noise Canceling. Beats is now a player but not even Bose is there yet. Their BT set is not ANR (surprising since they have been there in Aviation for a while now) and their ANR is not BT. That still doesn’t forgive some of the huge omissions and mistakes Logitech made with the UE9000s but it does force me me to cut them a little slack.

FIT AND FINISH: The UE9000s are big, heavy headphones. Tilt your head forward and they will shift and almost fall off. They look great and are well made. Those that had had them break must be treating them poorly as I have twisted them around a bit and found them to be as well made as any of their competitors. The fit is good but not great. My Bose OE2, my Lisghtspeed Zulus, my wife’s Bose A20s, and my brother’s Bose QuietComfort 15s can be worn all day with no fatigue. Not so with the UE9000. After two hours, the weight and side clamping can begin to take it’s toll. Yes, I’ve worn them for over two hours straight.

BUTTON LAYOUT: I’ve read a lot on the buttons and the overall layout makes a lot of sense! If you are wearing the headphones and reach up with your right hand to grasp the ear cup, the BT on/off button is EXACTLY where your index finger hits. Also, the volume/play/skip button if exactly where you thumb hits. When you lift your left hand and grasp the left ear cup, your index finger precisely hits the pause/listen button. I know that the power and pause buttons are nearly under the hinges but their locations make it easy to hit the buttons blindly every single time. I can see why they placed them where they did. This is very good logic.

BUTTON FUNCTIONS: The buttons might be laid out well, BUT this is where things go crazy. When I use ANY and all headphones, even the other UE sets I have, you have three buttons. Vol up, Play/Pause/SIRI/Skip/FF/RW, Vol down. Right? Well the UE9000′s three button layout is Vol+, Play/Stop/Skip, Vol- but you cannot FF or RW and you cannot press and hold the play button to launch SIRI. Before you surmise that this is a BT thing, my Bose single earpiece for talking on the phone can launch SIRI. My car can launch SIRI, my corded headsets can launch SIRI but these cannot. Unforgivable for a lifestyle headset. If Logitech wants us to “live” with these (read their marketing stuff on their website), I need to be able to sent texts, activate calls and more all with SIRI without having to take my phone out of my pocket! Add in lack of FF or RW and this is an epic fail. Epic!

SOUND QUALITY/ANR: These things sound really good. People write about hiss. Well, it exists. When the ANR is on, they hiss. When the music is playing I cannot hear it. FYI, our aviation headsets do not hiss at all. Some complain that the ANR is weak, well, it is. Now, before you ask Logitech to go crazy in this area, you really need to understand what you’re asking. Aviation, and Bose QuietComfort 15s are SO GOOD at ANR that it makes your ears feel plugged. Superior ANR makes me want to plug my nose a blow to clear my ears (Valsalva maneuver). Personally, I don’t want this. I want solid ANR that isn’t apparent and I think the UE9000s do this. Give me a 15-20% boost in the UE9001s and they’ll be perfect.

One of the ways I use these is to hook up to my iPad and listen to streaming TV shows like Monday Night Countdown or Football games while vacuuming or doing other chores and they work well. The Vacuum cleaner is not totally shut out but it’s muted enough that I can clearly hear the TV content. The Bluetooth allows me to be untethered from the iPad while working and the range is decent enough that I can move through half the house without losing the signal…

Very good but not perfect ~, January 4, 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What’s this?)

First point I have to make: if you are expecting these to shine while using Bluetooth, then you might be somewhat disappointed. Any headphone used via Bluetooth is handicapped by the actual Bluetooth software and connectivity. It works pretty well compared to some items, but it’s not as pure as having them plugged it. But you cannot use Bluetooth on airplanes, so even then the plug is necessary. But I haven’t had any major issues with using them via Bluetooth yet. I’ve been using them via Bluetooth on my Sony Vaio notebook and my Samsung Galaxy S phone. I plug them into my stereo (they do sound great but the cord is short), PSP, DS, 3DS, and my phone and notebook as well. The wireless works surprisingly well through my phone.

The noise cancellation is automatic while using the Bluetooth, so also take note of that. But when using it plugged in, you can toggle the cancellation off and on.

Comfort is great, the around the ear fit is nice, and I can wear these longer than my Sennheisers. Though these are a lot heavier. The other issue one might run into is due to the weight, it’s a bit tough to tip the earpiece down to hear someone talk then put it back on. It requires two hands, so if you are holding a device (Nintendo 3DS in my case) then you might have to put it down. The headband is a little less padded, so someone like me (who has a shaved head) will get a little crease on the skin.

The cord has volume controls and a mute button. It works with some devices such as iPods but not with others which I find odd. The volume controls on the actual earpiece also seem to work with some devices and not others. I figured the volume buttons were set with the headphones themselves… odd.

The sound quality is great as well. The combination of the earpiece comfort and sound is remarkable. The noise cancellation is as good as that on my pair of Bose. So what is the verdict?

For nearly the same price, the Sennheiser headphones seem to be the best: Sennheiser HD 650 Headphones. Though they are not Bluetooth. They do make a pair with Bluetooth, but they are comparable in price, quality, and design to these, so it is a toss up.

If you MUST have Bluetooth, it really doesn’t get much better than these. If you want the Ferrari of Headphones, the Sennheiser HD 650s are amazing. For insane value, the Sennheiser HD 598 are amazing and around 0. And for noise cancellation, the Bose is great as well.

Pros:
+ Great design and comfort
+ Easy access to volume controls
+ Included cord with adapter for devices
+ Nice carry case
+ Rechargeable
+ Great sound
+ Good noise cancellation

Cons:
- Not as great via Bluetooth
- Volume controls on the headphones and cord don’t always seem to work
- Noise cancellation always on when using via Bluetooth
- Price

Either way:
+- Short cord – great for small devices such as PSP and iPod, not great for reaching the stereo. Extension would have been nice.

***My verdict? They’re pretty great. I received mine through Amazon Vine, but if I had to spend my money? I’d spend less for the Sennheiser HD 598 and forgo the Bluetooth connectivity.
