Amazon Streaming a Future Option, March 20, 2013

By

Timothy L. Jenson (SANDY, UTAH United States) – See all my reviews

This review is from: LG Electronics BP530 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (2013 Model) (Electronics)

I noticed one reviewer pointed out that this player, doesn’t support Amazon’s streaming service. I wanted make people aware, that when you go into their premium services option, that there is a Amazon logo reporting that sometime in the future they plan on making that an option. I choose this player as LG has always been very good with supporting many codecs, and is a real solid player if you use DLNA, basically the ability to play compressed video and audio files on your computer’s hard drive to your TV via you wireless network. I have a lot of family home video’s video’s and video I’ve downloaded from YouTube that I like having access to watch on my big screen TV. Another feature and I haven’t tested this out, is in the past I found in previous LG players I’ve owned, you could often play DVD’s that where in recorded in PAL, I have a few DVD+R with video encoded in PAL, which is basically the standard that most European countries particularly the UK use. So if you have friends living across the pond this feature can come in handy. I haven’t tried playing any of my PAL dvds with this player, so it’s something you might want to check out if that is your reasoning for choosing this player.

As far as speed this players is very responsive compared to a Samsung player I bought a few years ago, and it’s faster loading the Netflix app that than my VIZO TV, and my former Samsung Blu-Ray. It does have the latest Netflix interface which is nice, so this is a very solid player. If I had a complaint regarding this player, it has a very limited number of apps, and services that you can choose from compared to other players. So if your looking for a fast solid not to expensive Blu-Ray player and plan on using DLNA, you could do worse. Sony I’ve heard is good at DNLA, Samsung is OK although the DNLA software that comes with it is very annoying as it goes in and relabels all your xvids and other compressed video files with an additional file extension that is very annoying if you choose to change to a different brand for your DLNA uses, because you have to go in a relabel them to make them play properly.

PLAYS REGION 2/B AND 1/A, April 12, 2013

By

B. Brierly – See all my reviews

This review is from: LG Electronics BP530 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (2013 Model) (Electronics)

I wanted on this June 20th, 2013 to add to my review. I haven’t changed my feelings about the product but though it will play BluRay region 2/B I am unable to play straight out Region 2 DVDs. It was quite disappointing when I realized that situation because I really enjoy a series from the UK that is only available in regular DVD and only in Region 2. Thus I had to get a Region free DVD player to play these kinds of series. I chose the Toshiba SD3300 Color Stream player for that purpose. …. And now, my original review.I bought the LG 3D Blu Ray player because of quality and price. Also it has wireless updating which eliminates having to hook a network cable to it to update the software. One surprising thing I found is that it will play regular Blu Ray discs that are made for Region 2/B which is Europe, the Middle East, Africa and so on where as Region 1/A is the USA and Canada. I accidentally bought a disk for Region 2/B and it wouldn’t play on my regular Blu Ray Player so I upgraded the player and it still wouldn’t play it. I put it in the LG 3D Blu Ray player and it played great. I suspected it was for the wrong region since it didn’t play after upgrading my Sony Blu Ray. I looked on my orders from Amazon and sure enough my disc was for Region 2/B. I am pleased that I didn’t have to return the program. I usually look at the region but usually Amazon sells Region 1/A but this time I didn’t check and sure enough got a program for the wrong region. Enough on that. The 3D picture produced by the LG Blu Ray player is second to none for a passive 3D machine (you don’t need wired 3D glasses. It uses the same 3D glasses as theaters use for 3D features). I have it connected via a HDMI cable to my 3D Toshiba LED 240hz tv which puts out the best tv picture I have ever seen. I found out you have to be careful about 3D LED tvs because a lot of them are 120hz which is a slower refresh rate and produce a lesser quality 3D picture. All in all I am even more pleased with the Blu Ray player since it will apparently play any region disc.

My first-ever LG electronic device – and probably my last…, May 12, 2013

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)

I received this unit about a month ago, and set it up the day I received it. Having used it for nearly a month, now, I have plenty of thoughts on this product, and would highly recommend you read this review before you consider purchasing it. I would also highly recommend that the folks at LG read this review so they can improve future products and still keep the better features that this item does possess.

As I mentioned, above, this was the first LG device I have owned. I nearly bought an LG washer and dryer last year, but ended up going with a Samsung. I also was once considering purchasing an LG HDTV. Again, I ended up going with a Samsung. I received this particular unit as a free product to review for amazon. Thank goodness I did not purchase this product, outright. I would have been far more disappointed in it. For now, though, I will list it’s positive attributes, and I’ll highlight the negatives, later.

1. Easy to set-up. It probably took less than five minutes to take the unit out of the box, attach it to the TV (via HD cable, which IS NOT included – as is the case with most electronics), load the [included] battery into the remote, and fire it up.

2. Ergonomic remote control. This remote control is definitely the most ergonomic remote control I have ever owned. It is neither too big nor too small, and is designed in such a way as to make it very easy to hold. The remote has a concave section on its underside that sits right about where your index finger is located. Not only does this make it easy to hold onto, but the convex surface on the top side is situated right where your thumb rests, and is covered with the most important buttons – the Stop, Play, Rewind, Fast Forward, etc. You can pick up this remote in an extremely dark room and have no problem figuring out which end is which or where the key buttons are at. In a competitive world of great electronic choices, little touches like this make a big difference.

3. Easy internet connectivity. Just to make it clear, this device isn’t “Wi-Fi Ready” or “Wi-Fi Capable,” it’s fully Wi-Fi connected. The last Blu-Ray player I purchased was deceptive in its connectivity language. Sure, you could connect it to the internet via Wi-Fi, but only if you purchased a specific USB plug from the manufacturer that costs . Considering the Blu-Ray player, itself, cost me , learning that it was going to cost me another to connect it to my computer really ticked me off. This unit from LG make connectivity a snap. After setting up the password and downloading a software update (which took about 10 minutes), it was ready to play movie via VuDu or Netflix.

4. Premium movie streaming channels at the ready. This unit comes with free trials of all of the premium video streaming services. Being a user of Netflix, it was easy to log on and begin streaming children’s movies for my kids. And, seeing as how nearly every Blu-Ray movie sold at Wal-Mart these days comes with a digital download copy accessible through VuDu, it was a wise decision to include that service, as well. Consumers appreciate little things like this.

5. Clean, neat device. The actual player is of standard size, but looks very nice and neat without any superfluous details. I like simplified devices, and this device is pretty simple to use.

6. 3-D Playback. Because I do not own a 3-D TV, I did not have the opportunity to try out this feature. Honest, I am not completely sold on 3-D viewing, so I don’t know if I will EVER own a 3-D TV, but at least the feature is there if it is something that appeals to you.

7. A built-in hard drive for downloading apps. This is a really new thing for devices like Blu-ray players. At launch, there were about three dozen apps that were available for download and use on the player. These ranged from educational to musical to entertainment to gaming to photo-viewing. I downloaded a few of them (like the Red Bull extreme sports channel) to try them out. It was OK. It’s definitely a new an evolving feature, so I don’t expect to be blown away – especially at the start of the venture. I’m sure this design and added entertainment feature will improve over time. Who knows what this will encompass even a year from now? For now, it’s a bit of a gimmick, and not incredibly appealing, but I have a feeling that this technological feature will be more appealing in a few more years.

And now, the negatives. They are few but significant.

1. No resume playback feature. I was absolutely STUNNED to find that this player did not have the capability to recall the last place I had stopped watching a movie and resume playback from that spot! I thought this was a universal feature on EVERY player! Haven’t digital video players had this capability for years? To not have this as a standard, automatic feature is really unforgiveable.

2. Freeze-ups during video playback. The…
