With Thanksgiving and Black Friday rapidly approaching, the top-tier TV makers are using dealer incentives, known as instant rebates, to aggressively lower the prices on their HDTVs. This week we found a large number of models with savings up to 49% off.

While there will be Black Friday (BF) specials on a number of HDTVs (and we’ll be covering them as soon as the ads leak), readers should be aware that the vast majority of BF deals are not top-tier brands (i.e. LG, Panasonic, Samsung) but rather tier 3 products (i.e Sceptre, Ocosmo, Vizio etc.). So what’s the difference?
Samsung, LG, and Panasonic make most of the plasma and LCD panels within their respective TVs. They also make the circuit boards and many of the other components. Because they manufacture and assemble many of the TV’s parts, they can better control quality and reliability. In addition, all these companies maintain their own parts inventories and a national service network.
Tier 3 TV companies make nothing themselves. They contract out third parties to design, manufacture, and assemble their products. Parts are obtained from third party suppliers as well. When it comes to parts availability, many tier 3 companies outsource parts distribution. Unlike a Samsung that sells cell phones, major appliances, digital cameras, and a host of other products, tier 3 companies tend to only sell TVs and related items (like sound bars or possibly branded HDMI cables). Samsung, LG, and Panasonic want a customer for the long haul, while the tier 3 companies tend to only care about selling a TV today. The result? Once a TV is out of warranty, you may learn that the part is not available, or is priced higher than an entirely new replacement TV. We refer to these as “Disposable TVs”.
