Do not know why my hard drive suddenly 0GB, i try to flash rom and result my hdd not detect in bios and not spin..

and i have donor same pcb, i read tutorial form this http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=1127 how backup and write rom. and check my rom with wdromvfy.exe from this http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=997 my rom ok.
But, when i flash to new pcb the results is are not detect. finally 2 my hard drive not detected in bios, no spin up, no detect in wdr demo/wdmarvel demo.. i try in mini xp and normal xp 32 bit same not detect.

i have serial com, and i see to flash rom with UCommand but i dont have full version.

So just PC3K, and MRT or DFL-WD to fix my hard drive? or there another solution?

Hello there !

One of the biggest problems with nowadays users is that they will get some firmware tools for a very cheap price (or for free) and they will start to play with them without understanding what they are doing.

While backing up the firmware of a drive is always a good thing to do, starting to mess with it or restore it on a working drive with valid data is a very BAD idea !!!!

One should NEVER play with a drive with data unless you are willing to loose that data (and the drive).

Flashing the ROM on a PCB that is working is not a good idea as well unless there is a valid reason to do so.

If the drive stops to ID with it's correct capacity but it's still spinning and working at some level then the chances are that the ROM is still working and the problem might be with SA (on the platter) and not with ROM.

Have you done something to the drive with WDR so that it would stop showing it's true capacity or did the drive start to show 0GB from one day to the other without the use of firmware tools ?

My guess is that the drive started to show 0GB because of some internal problem like SA modules that couldn't be read and by writing a ROM with either wrong size or bad procedure caused the ROM to be damaged as well and so the drive no longer spins.

Even if you fix the ROM you will still have to deal with the original problem that caused the drive to be 0GB sized.

So at this point if you have some important data inside the drive I would suggest you to send the drive to a specialized data recovery firm to get it fixed in a reliable way.

I would also say that the problem with the damaged ROM might have been caused either by attempting to write wrong sized ROM images (for example if you are writing a dump of an MCU masked ROM to a ROM chip on a PCB with more space to write data without filling the end of the image file) or by the OS/System attempting to access the drive while WDR is doing the same, messing up the ROM writing process.

At this point the best option would be to send the drive to someone with more knowledge (reputable DR firm if possible) for a fix unless you want to make matter worse and loose the data for good.

Regards and good luck.
