University of Texas at Arlington

Friendly, affordable, culturally diverse and located 20 miles west of downtown Dallas, Arlington is also a city of choice for families seeking great schools for their students. From kindergarten through college and beyond, Arlington is home to a wide variety of different educational institutions, both public and private, that parents can depend on to deliver quality instruction.

K-12 schools – public and charter

For families that choose public school education for their students, it’s important to know that Arlington is divided into four independent school districts (ISDs). In order of size, they include Arlington ISD, Mansfield ISD, Grand Prairie ISD and Kennedale ISD. The Texas Education Agency has ranked Arlington, Mansfield and Grand Prairie as “academically acceptable.” The TEA has ranked the smallest district, Kennedale, as “recognized.”

Currently, the largest of these districts, Arlington ISD, enrolls more than 64,000 students, and has four regular high schools and four alternative ones. The next largest, Mansfield ISD, includes six high schools and boasts a competition-level stadium, a natatorium complex and a center for the performing arts. Grand Prairie ISD enrolls 26,000 and has three high schools, while Kennedale has just one high school, but one with a wide variety of student clubs, including a chapter of the National Honor Society.

For parents interested in charter schools, Arlington has four. They include Summit International Preparatory and Grace Preparatory Academy, both of are K-12 institutions. One school, the Texas Leadership Charter Academy, has a Pre-K program in addition to a regular K-12 program. And finally, Arlington Classics Academy, which has two campuses, teaches students from kindergarten through seventh grade.

Colleges and professional schools

After high school graduation, students have many options for higher education, all in their backyard. The most prominent among these is the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). This popular UT-branch campus currently enrolls approximately 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has especially strong programs in engineering and nursing. Buildings within the campus complex are among the oldest in the Metroplex and include (among others) the original Arlington High School structure.

For students interested in pursuing a four (or two-year) post-secondary school route that includes community college, Arlington is home to the Southeast campus of Tarrant County College. The school currently offers degree programs that allow students to work toward associate degrees in arts, science, applied science and arts in teaching.

Arlington also has two other collegiate options for students. One, Arlington Baptist College, which is affiliated with the World Baptist Fellowship, offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Two for-profit institutions, Brightwood (formerly Kaplan) College and the University of Phoenix, as well the Ogle School of Cosmetology, offer students other educational/professional development opportunities as well.
