Welcome distinguished guests, The Honourable Mr Bernie Finn, Member for Western Metropolitan, Mr Graham Morris, Chair of the People and Parks Foundation, and we acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri people.
Welcome and thank you for coming out today for the formal unveiling of what we at Variety hope will become a distinguishing landmark for all children, especially for all the special needs children we seek to support. This is a unique Playscape which was based on the natural and cultural heritage of the park. It will become a great meeting place for everyone, welcoming people of all ages and most importantly will include equipment for children with special needs.
Variety is privileged to be part of the creation of an innovative Playscape for communities in Western Melbourne and beyond. It will encourage families to connect with the natural environment and the important cultural knowledge and stories of Brimbank Park. In many playgrounds children with disabilities just have to watch, but this Park gives those children a chance to join in and have fun. During my involvement with Variety I have been privileged to watch children, who have had to sit on the sidelines, able to join their able bodied friends when these sorts of facilities are provided. For children, there are few things as joyful as being able to go to a playground. This Playscape will be warmly welcomed. Our aim is to encourage all Children to Live, Laugh and Learn.
Variety was privileged to partner with Parks Victoria, The People and Parks Foundation and the John T Reid Charitable Trust.
On behalf of the Variety Board of Management, its sponsors and supporters, I would like to thank those involved:
the Playscape designer Ric McConaghy and the ACCLA architects
the Wurundjeri Elders who shared their knowledge and stories to develop the Playscape and
the local primary students who created the artworks that are installed in the playscape.
