2014 Academy Award nominees Cate Blanchett and David O. Russell were among those honored over the weekend at the 29th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Blanchett was feted with a “Outstanding Performer of the Year” tribute evening on Feb. 1 which also celebrated her Best Actress-worthy performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. Pete Hammond moderated a discussion at the Arlington Theater which highlighted both Blanchett’s life and career.
Rooney Mara presented the actress with her award before guests including SBIFF jurors Frances Fisher and Anthony Zerbe headed to the Hennessy Privilège-presented post-party.
O. Russell was also honored at the festival with its very first Outstanding Director award. On Jan. 31, American Hustle‘s Oscar-nominated director headed to the Arlington for a discussion moderated by fest director Roger Durling. He was presented with his award by Melissa Leo, who won an Academy Award herself for starring in his film, The Fighter.
Over the course of the festival, which runs from Jan. 30 to Feb 9, those being honored will include Bruce Dern (Nebraska) with its Modern Master Award; Robert Redford (All Is Lost) with its American Riviera Award; Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) with its Montecito Award; Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) with its Cinema Vanguard Award; and Daniel Bruhl (Rush), Adele Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Color), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station), Brie Larson(Short Term 12), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) and June Squibb (Nebraska) with its Virtuosos Award. It has already honored Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) with its Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at a pre-festival ceremony.
