Harrison County Sheriff Joe Myers said that his office will be offering National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on two different Saturdays; April 18, and April 25. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.
Americans that participated in the ninth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on September 27, 2014 the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and 4,076 of its national, tribal, and community law enforcement partners collected 617,150 pounds (309 tons) of unwanted prescription drugs at 5,495 sites. This brought the total amount of drugs collected in four years to 4,823,251 pounds, or 2,411 tons. Take-back initiative removes from circulation 2,411 tons of unused prescription drugs in four years.
“The amount of prescription drugs turned in by the American public during the past nine Take-Back Day events speaks volumes about the need to develop a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs,” said Sheriff Joe Myers. “With the continued support and hard work of our more than 88 county sheriff’s offices, local, and tribal law enforcement and community partners, these nine events have dramatically reduced the risk of prescription drug diversion and abuse, and increased awareness of this critical public health issue,” said Sheriff Myers. Myers also warned against flushing unused prescription drugs down the toilet, throwing them in the trash, or keeping them in the household medicine cabinet, resulting in contamination of the water supply and the theft and abuse of the prescription drugs.
Sheriff Joe Myers and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office along with several area businesses will again partner to provide a safe drop-off point for unwanted, expired and unused medications. Custer Pharmacy, 122 S Main St, Cadiz; Cadiz; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rite Aid Pharmacy, 651 Lincoln St, Cadiz; 9am to 12 p.m. and Neimayer Pharmacy, 112 E Main St, Scio will be collecting on Saturday, April 18, and Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Sheriff Joe Myers states that by chance you miss these to date there is a drop box right inside the front door of the Sheriff Office, which is open to everyone 24/7 to take the unwanted drugs. The Sheriff reminds everyone that no liquids are accepted.
