What does the unconscious mind have to do with emotions?
How does it function with regards to the body?
Let’s take the first question. According to Dr. Tad James, master NLP trainer’s “Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind,” the unconscious mind (UM) is the domain of the emotions.
This is where our emotions “live.”
Let’s think about that. Actually, let’s experiment with that. Think about something that makes you happy. Get a picture, get the feeling. That’s right. Where in your body do you feel that?
So what I understand this to mean is the happy thought brings about a happy feeling and this has something to do with the unconscious mind (UM). This being true, the UM seems like it is part of the body as well as the mind. We feel emotions in our body.
When we are feeling “good energy” or “bad energy” this generally relates to our emotions. One of the Prime Directives of the UM states that this part of our mind stores, distributes, generates and transmits energy. We can focus on energy entering our body from the Earth or a Universal source (as examples) and imagine transmitting it somewhere.
Energetic NLP (ENLP) is an off-shoot of traditional NLP that focuses on energy. This is a study of a way to work with that energy trough the use of imagination. As ENLP’s founder, Art Giser says, energy flows where your thoughts go. This leads us to another of the Prime Directives, this one is about values.
The UM is a highly moral being. This relates to the morality that you accepted in your formative years. This accounts for the inner nudges we get with regards to a given morality, we choose to go along with the nudge or not.
The UM also is believed to run the bodily functions. It is what kept you breathing and your heart beating last night while you were asleep. It directs the digestion of food. It’s a good thing you don’t have to tell the body what to do! Dr.James, in his Prime Directives of the UM states that the UM has a blueprint of perfect health. The belief of the existence of a blueprint for perfect health is a helpful belief to have in any kind of healing work.
Another connection with the body is that the UM preserves the body. It appears to have a desire for survival of the body. I have seen something interesting, however. When a person is doing work that they don’t resonate with, it can take a toll on the body. It seems the UM also “wants” us to live what we feel is a life purpose.
It is fascinating to think about the many functions of the unconscious mind. Take a moment right now and think about all of the things your UM is doing at this moment in time.
As you read this, certain emotions arise.
You may be digesting food.
Your heart is beating and you are breathing without thinking of it (most likely).
What else is your unconscious mind doing?
