PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK by Adam Waldman
SOTO – “Wrath”
It is said that “timing is everything.” On the heels of an incredibly powerful campaign to commemorate National Bullying Prevention Month, which featured an in-depth interview with Jeff Scott Soto, Hard Rock Daddy announced yesterday a new feature called Music Discovery Monday (debuting on 11/10/14). Don’t be surprised to see “Wrath” by SOTO end up as one of the featured songs on Music Discovery Monday in the very near future.
When Jeff and I discussed the track during our interview, he said…
“I was aiming for a Foo Fighters kind of thing. I love the way that they’re able to take something so heavy and make it so melodic. They just have such catchy, melodic choruses that you can sing along to. I wanted something that was so blistering heavy, but still very melodic.”
Soto is a brilliant singer with an incredible resume, and yet, he has still managed to fly under the radar to some degree. Clearly, radio is in love with the Foo Fighters, so they should take a listen to “Wrath” and see that it belongs on Active Rock radio too.
As I mentioned earlier, timing is everything. Not only is this kickass track inspired by the Foo Fighters (Active Rock’s latest infatuation), but today is also Jeff Scott Soto’s birthday.

What song still hasn’t found its limit? Which songs seem to have hit their ceiling? A little movement in the middle and some newcomers at the bottom, all on this week’s HRD Radio Report.
CHART TOPPERS
An old Scorpions song said “Don’t Stop At The Top!” I’m thinking that Dio may not be the only 80s icon that Foo Fighters are partial to. Already at #1 on the Mediabase Active Rock chart with “Something From Nothing,” Grohl & Bros padded their lead over the runner-up with a remarkable 23% increase in airplay over last week. Five Finger Death Punch’s “Wrong Side Of Heaven” ascended to #2 with a solid week, but the chase could be futile for a solid song that’s approaching its third month on the chart. Slipknot may also find themselves denied an elusive chart-topping single as “The Devil In I” remains at #3 for a third consecutive week. Newcomers, Royal Blood, inch up a spot to #4 with “Figure It Out,” while rock royalty AC/DC reaches #5 with perhaps the final bit of momentum for “Play Ball.”
CHART HIGHLIGHTS
Just behind the frontrunners, Seether (“Same Damn Life”), Volbeat (“Doc Holliday”), Three Days Grace (“I Am Machine”) and Godsmack (“Something Different”) are bunched up in spots #7-10. Asking Alexandria continues “Moving On” this week, up four spots to #17. The latest from Sixx A.M. continues to climb as “Stars” moves up six places to #29.
Four new songs arrived in the Top 50 this week: Charm City Devils “Shots” at #50, We As Human “Bring To Life” at #48, Like A Storm “Wish You Hell” arrives at #46 and Buckcherry “Say Fuck It” pops in at #45. The highest of these new entries is perhaps the most surprising as well. Buckcherry’s revamped cover of Icona Pop’s “I Love It” was released around three months ago, but is just now breaking on to the Active Rock chart with a sudden burst of airplay. While not unheard of for a song to chart so slowly, it’s unusual enough to take note of this rarity.

“Wish You Hell” – Like A Storm
You might think integrating delta blues into a hard rock song might require a bit of Southern DNA. Well, it’s hard to get more “southern” than the South Pacific. Just as Volbeat invokes the spirit of Johnny Cash, these New Zealand newcomers found just the right tone to put you firmly on a darkened front porch swatting at mosquitoes… and then blowing you right off of that porch with a good-riddance anthem. One of those songs that you just can’t avoid grinning about from the first few notes. (see Hard Rock Daddy review)
I CALL B#LL$HIT!
Anybody got a shovel handy? While I’m happy to report that all of our recent fertilizer tracks are slowly fading away at this point, there were still roughly 2,600 spins wasted again this week on songs from Weezer, Black Keys, Death From Above 1979, Kongos and Fall Out Boy. That’s enough airplay for 4-5 top 20 songs. Stop the madness!

Could next week see Pretty Reckless break out another hit single? How will a new Papa Roach song strike radio’s fancy?
