Old people are great, aren’t they? Grandparents always seem to have a secret stash of chocolate somewhere in the house, are able to fill you in on several months worth of soap opera-related news and still give you a pound pocket money every time they see you (even though you’re twenty-five years old). But what if we told you that your grandparents should also be your holiday inspiration?
Holidaying in the UK has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last few years, and it turns out that dear old Grandma and Grandpa had the right idea all along. Here are our top four suggestions for holidays to try out this year (with or without the Old Folks in tow).
Caravan Parks
No longer the domain of the gray-haired alone, caravan holidays can be great fun with a group of mates. Take it from someone who has spent a lot of time in caravans and campervans over the years- there’s something about pulling up in a green leafy field with a car-load of pals and cramming everyone into a caravan that still feels like being on a Scouts Camp.
To make a caravan holiday successful, there are a few things you should pack: a good book (because it’s the UK and it probably will rain), a deck of cards (for good old fashioned fun….and drinking games), plenty of booze (it’s better to avoid the dodgy local disco and stick with drinking wine from a box in your caravan) and finally, a pair of walking boots/ shoes. If you’re going to be holidaying in a caravan, embrace the outdoors and spend your afternoons hiking (leisurely) around the surrounding countryside. It makes the evening BBQ all the more rewarding.

Bingo Holidays
Who can forget the excitement when your high school Maths teacher told you the lesson would be spent playing Bingo? (It’s all numbers, right?) Bingo was cool then and it’s still cool now.
There are loads of holiday destinations that offer bingo every night- from high rollers in Las Vegas to more low key games in holiday parks, there’s a Bingo holiday to suit everyone. Head over to Titan Bingo for more information on places to visit.
Coach Trips
My Grandfolks go on a coach trip at least once a year, all pilling into a big bus and heading somewhere on the UK south coast for a couple of days of roast dinners and craft fairs. So when an Aussie friend living in London invited me to go on a coach trip with her, I thought she was mad. Turns out, she wasn’t. There are loads of companies based in both the UK and Europe that organize coach trips for travelers. Even if you live in the UK, this can be a brilliant way of exploring a new city and having a weekend-long adventure. Pick a place you’ve never been too, pack a few pairs of clean undies and you’re pretty much ready to go.
Costa Del Sol
The Costa Del Sol has had a mixed bag of publicity in the last few years, with TV shows from ‘Benidorm’ to ‘The Only Way Is Marbella’ showing various sides to the Sunshine Coast.
But Old People and Essex girls aside, the Costa Del Sol offers 320 days of sunshine and plenty of culture and history to make it a perfect destination for a short get away. With old towns made up of cobbled paving stones and street performances, restaurants serving up paella and excellent Spanish wines, and plenty of Instagram-worthy beaches, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t joined your Grandparents on holiday before.
