Did you know that a cucumber makes for fabulous skin care? The cucumber contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe irritated skin and reduce swelling. Cucumbers are often used to reduce eye puffiness because the unique properties of cucumbers can reduce water retention and improve complexion. Cucumbers have the same pH as the skin which allows them to restore the skin’s natural balance while hydrating and nourishing the skin with vital minerals including silica, potassium and magnesium.

This easy recipe for my Cucumber Sugar Scrub is a part of a simple skin care routine that takes dry, chapped skin and transforms it into soft, supple skin that glows.

I live in the Rockies in an “alpine desert” and the air here is dry and chilly most of the year. When you want to keep warm you get indoors and warm up by the fire or a heater. The only trouble is – hot, dry air — drys out the skin.

This easy recipe and simple routine will not only improve the softness of your skin, it will moisturize and improve its appearance as well. And this Cucumber Sugar Scrub recipe can easily be enhanced with the essential oils you enjoy. Try soothing lavender for relaxation or add peppermint to wake up the skin. Three to four drops is all you need to add aroma and the properties of essentials oils.

An easy DIY routine for Healing Dry Skin

This skin care routine includes four simple tasks for skin restoration while in the shower or bath. Shower or bathe as you normally would, and at the end of your routine add these easy steps:

Exfoliate dry skin with the Cucumber Sugar Scrub. Be careful as the floor may get a bit slippery from the coconut oil in this recipe. Sloughing off dead skin will restore you skin’s natural glow and give it a chance for skin moisturizers to sink in.

Rinse off the Cucumber Sugar Scrub and apply Jergens® Wet Skin™ Moisturizer. I like the Green Tea Oil and Monoi Oil varieties. Green tea offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, and topical green tea polyphenols have been shown to slow down the development of some signs of aging. The scent of the Monoi’s Oil Wet Skin™ Moisturizer transports you to a tropical island and the formula contains Monoi which is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin E and free radical-fighting antioxidants. Just the right topical ingredients to heal and restore your skin. Jergens® Wet Skin™ Moisturizer instantly locks in moisture on wet skin.

Pat dry and apply Jergens® Natural Glow™ – Warmer weather will be here soon, and Jergens® Natural Glow® Moisturizers are fabulous for achieving beautiful, natural-looking color to enrich the appearance of one’s skin. I love the daily moisturizing pumps since they’re so easy to use — I like to add a bit of color to help my skin — so I can have a natural glow.

Keep Jergens® Ultra Healing® Extra Dry Skin Moisturizer by the sink. The best way to ensure softer hands throughout the day is to keep a soft silky moisturizer like Jergens® Ultra Healing® Extra Dry Skin Moisturizer next to the bathroom and kitchen sinks. Just having a skin care lotion there reminds me to re-apply moisturizer every time I wash my hands. It absorbs quickly and locks in moisture for up to 48 hours.

That’s it! Now skin is smoother, softer, and shows a touch of color. Want to know how to make this easy recipe for Cucumber Sugar Scrub with Essentials Oils? Keep reading and I’ll walk you through the steps below.

Materials needed for Cucumber Sugar Scrub with Essentials Oils

1 1/4 Cups of Granulated Sugar

1 Cup chopped Cucumber (leave the skin on)

1/3 Cup Coconut Oil

1 Tablespoon Honey

4 Drops of your favorite essential oil

Directions to create the Cucumber Sugar Scrub with Essentials Oils

Step 1: Gather your ingredients. Having everything gathered together and ready to mix. Wash and dry the cucumber and chop it into 1/2 inch cubes. Measure and set aside the sugar, honey and coconut oil so they’re ready  to mix.

Step 2: Pulverize the Cucumber. My mom gave me a new food processing/mixer for Christmas and I knew I just had to use it for this recipe. Since most blenders require liquid, you’ll want to pulverize the cucumber first. Add the chopped cucumber to the food processor and chop it until all the moisture is released and the skin has been chopped to a fine texture. Now you’re ready to add some of the other ingredients.

Step 3: Add the other semi-liquids next. Now you can add the honey, coconut oil, and your essential oil(s) to the mix. Pulse until everything is smooth and well combined.

Step 4: Add the sugar. I added 1/4 cup of the sugar to the mix and pulsed to mix. Wait to add the rest until after you’ve stopped blending so you don’t lose the exfoliating properties of the sugar.

Step 5: Add the rest of the sugar. Remove the mix from the blender or food processor and stir in the sugar. You want the rough texture of the sugar to act as your exfoliant.

Shelf Life

Gift it forward: if you do not plan to use this Cucumber recipe in its entirety within one to two weeks, you’ll want gift it to friends for immediate use. I packed mine in some adorable 4 oz containers and gave them away. If you just want to make a small batch, reduce the recipe to 1/4 of the ingredients listed. For best results, always store homemade beauty products in air tight, waterproof containers. Since the ingredients are natural, they will not last forever. Leftovers can often be safely stored in the refrigerator for a week or two as long as the mix remains untouched and not contaminated by bacteria or water.

Making homemade beauty products can be very rewarding for two reasons – you get fantastic results and you get hugs from friends. I hope you enjoy soft, smooth skin with this fantastic beauty routine and the glow that comes from sharing the gift of beauty with others!
