Pregnancy cravings. These are very real occurrences that must be taken seriously and fulfilled quickly. Trust me there is not much worse than a pregnant woman who wants a specific beverage or food – just ask my hubby… this is his 4th time around the block, hehe. And just how every baby is completely different so are the pregnancies right down to the cravings. So what is Mama Harper craving with Baby Harper #4? Well, where beverages are concerned it is lemonade. I just can not get enough of the stuff… the sour of the lemons mixed with the sweetness of the sugar is pure bliss. But what if my love for lemonade could do more good than just curing a craving? What if it could help support the fight against childhood cancer? Surprisingly it can!
Have you heard of Alex’s Lemonade Stand? This truly amazing foundation for childhood cancer was founded and created by one heroic little girl – Alexanda “Alex” Scott.
When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand”, held with the help of her older brother Patrick, raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause.
In 2004 when Alex passed away at the age of eight—her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. Our mission is simple: to raise money for and awareness of childhood cancer causes—especially research into new treatments and cures—and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer. Since Alex set up her first lemonade stand in 2000—truly exemplifying the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”—we have raised more than $80 million.
It is truly inspiring what has been created from one brave little girl’s request to have one simple lemonade stand. In fact there are even many big corporate sponsors that have gotten involved as well. One of those companies happens to be a favorite restaurant of mine – Red Robin. Just the other evening the hubby and I visited Red Robin on our date night. I, of course, had to order the famous Red Robin Freckled Lemonade – lemonade with fresh strawberries!
Have you ever tried the Freckled Lemonade at Red Robin? If not make sure to stop by on National Lemonade Day which is August 20th because participating Red Robin’s across the country will be hosting lemonade stands where they will be serving Freckled Lemonade samples to guests and collecting donations to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. But even if you can’t make it to a Red Robin on August 20th that doesn’t mean you can’t help – there are plenty more ways to help fight childhood cancer one cup at a time.
You can purchase an Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation eGift Card on the Red Robin website.
