I’ve finally come to grips with the fact that my little Miss Willow Jean will not sleep through the night until she is completely weaned from breastfeeding.  This isn’t anything new for me as both Alleigh and Kaelyn were the same way, but the big difference was that I weaned them at 12 and 13 months old.  I made the choice to continue nursing Willow past her first birthday and am fairly certain I will let her self wean, but at 17 months old she has still been waking up at least once a night, if not more, to comfort nurse.  I’ll be honest and say that I am at my wits end and I really could desperately use a full night’s sleep.  I needed something that would encourage her to at least sleep for longer stretches so that I could get some serious sleep too.  I found my answer with the Marpac Dohmie.

The concept of the Dohmie is quite simple – turn it on and tune out the world.  The lightweight portable dome shaped contraption is able to accomplish this by creating a natural white noise.  This white noise is seamless and continuous because it uses electromechanical technology to create the natural sound of rushing air.  For a while we had been using a stuffed animal with a heart beat sound in an attempt to get Willow to sleep for longer stretches, but as soon as it would shut off she would wake up.  I love that the Dohmie does not automatically shut off and since it doesn’t work on a digital loop there are no awkward pauses.  To me it sounds like a powerful ceiling fan running without freezing to death, hehe.  Dustin would be very pleased if we got a second Dohmie for our bedroom so that I could shut the fan off in the winter months…  I need that white noise!

The Dohmie features two speeds, but the tone and volume can be further customized with a simple twist which makes the openings larger.  The slanted openings on the side of the Dohmie as well as the round openings on the top can be adjusted separately to create a perfect personal sound environment.

The bright white finish, raised silver medallion, and gray on/off switch give the Dohmie an attractive appearance that looks nice sitting out in the nursery.

But the most important part is that it works!  Willow’s nursery doesn’t have a door on it, but is right off the living room and so whenever we would lay her down for the night the television would need to be turned down super low as to not wake her, but now with the Dohmie we can actually hear our television.  Our neighbors have dogs that bark whenever a car drives by and I no longer have to worry about Willow waking from one of their episodes.  She also will sleep right through a thunder storm.  It’s blissful!  I will be totally honest and say that she still does not sleep through the night, but she definitely sleeps for much longer stretches.  Most nights she is now waking up one time, but not until nearly 5:30am when I just bring her to bed with me.

If you have a little one that is struggling with falling asleep or staying asleep I urge you to give the Dohmie a try.  The baby bundle includes the Dohm-NSF sound conditioner by Marpac (the Official Sound Conditioner of the National Sleep Foundation), a “Sleep 101″ guide from the NSF and an original “Buddy the Bee” storybook, to help you and your baby “find your ZZZZs” with a soothing bedtime tale and routine.  Plus a charitable contribution is made for every Dohmie bundle sold.  It’s time for some serious sleep with Dohmie.
