Did you know it’s World Breastfeeding Week?  This year’s theme is “Breastfeeding Support:  Close to Mothers” which highlights breastfeeding peer counseling.  One of the biggest things that needs to happen for mom and baby to have a strong breastfeeding relationship is for mom to have a strong support system backing her up.  I have been super blessed with a husband, family, and pediatrician that are very supportive of my commitment to exclusive breastfeeding.  But for many women that is not the case.  Often times formula is pushed on them by family, doctors, and nurses for various reasons which then creates a snowball effect that can damage a strong breastfeeding relationship.  During those first few emotionally trying weeks when our hormones are balancing back out it can be very overwhelming to have people undermining a mother’s decision to breastfeed.  We need to support a mother’s decision and do anything in our power to help her.

Between my three daughters I have breastfed for a total of 36 glorious months and counting.  Alleigh was breastfed for her first 12 months.  Kaelyn nursed to 13 months.  And Willow is 11 months old and still going strong.  I have absolutely no intentions of weaning her any time soon and plan to let her self wean when she is ready.  I pray that one day soon breastfeeding will be normalized again and the only way to do that is to expose the public to breastfeeding.  I do my part by nursing in public whenever my babies are hungry and sharing adorably cute breastfeeding pictures on my Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts frequently.  I thought it would be fun to share Willow’s nursing pictures I have collected from birth through today.

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week I will be participating in The Big Latch On.  This is an event where groups of breastfeeding women come together at registered locations around the world and at a set time they all latch on their child for one minute while being counted by witnesses. The numbers are added up and hopefully we will beat the previous Big Latch On records or maybe even the world record!  Check out The Big Latch On website to find a location near you.

Another great way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week is a giveaway chock full of awesome breastfeeding products… got your attention?
