I first posted this homemade Deer Valley granola recipe over five years ago. I stumbled across it while writing an eBay guide featuring healthy breakfast ideas for kids and I was like, why the heck haven’t we made this lately? It’s so easy and full of so many different nuts and seeds—it’s quite possibly the most interesting granola I’ve tasted.

And I mean the good kind of interesting, not the “I’m not sure if that haircut was the right choice” kind of interesting.

Though Deer Valley granola takes 30 minutes to bake, it’s totally worth it. That brown sugar and honey coating is perfection. If I were you, I’d double the recipe. It stores well in an airtight container and you’ll go through it faster than you think!

This homemade granola is perfect atop yogurt, frozen yogurt or ice cream or as your breakfast cereal. (I love it with unsweetened vanilla almond milk!) You can also munch on it straight from the container; I won’t judge!

Recipe type: Snack

Cuisine: Granola

Serves: 16

Ingredients

3 cups old-fashioned oats

1 cup instant nonfat dry milk powder

¾ cup shelled sunflower seeds

¾ cup sliced almonds

⅓ cup sesame seeds

⅓ cup pumpkin seeds

⅓ cup flaked coconut

⅓ cup chopped pecans, optional

¼ cup canola oil

½ cup honey

½ cup brown sugar

½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Add the oats, milk powder, sunflower seeds, almonds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, coconut and pecans in a large bowl. Mix until combined.

Measure the oil in a 1-cup measure. Swish it to coat up to the ¾-cup mark, then add the honey to the mark. Add brown sugar and vanilla. Pour liquids over dry ingredients.

Mix until granola is evenly coated. Note: I found it worked best to use a large silicone spatula first and then mix by hand.

Spread onto a large baking sheet, about ½-inch deep. Bake 30 minutes or until golden brown, stirring after 15 minutes so the granola in the middle will brown evenly with the edges.

Cool and store in an airtight container.
