I just finished putting some hours on a kemper. 4 hours rehearsals DI and a lot in a studio just getting to know it actually.
As far as variety, the absolute possible absence of digital feeling or artifacts and having a whore house of virtually any amp, it's the king. It also sounds louder and clearer than anything in my oppinion which is also a bonus and showing of good analog stages. I like it more than the axe-fx to be honest.
So why the prologue?
While I won't take any of those over an actual amp (although I admire how the kemper is not buried in rehearsals) for both sound and feeling, I can't really help but give the honors to the eleven rack.
If you only need what the eleven racks does good (some specific amp models are what, like 95% there? Marshalls in particular even vs the kemper) plus the fact that it is a cool quality audio interface, standalone unit etc, then really, you don't really need much more than that.
It was created to be a quality unit from the beginning and it shows. Some if its sounds will never be top notch for me (and you steinmetzify, I don't like its recto, mark or bogner or anything "very" high gain from the 11R) but for me those are the sounds that get fucked in the anus in a gig from their inception (that massive wall of distortion that you search to see where it went when the others start playing!).
So it's not as good as it digitally gets? It doesn't have an ass load of effects? Well it's more than good enough before the price factor comes in and when you take that into account, it's one of the value for money kings. Very cool unit.
If I needed a unit like this to gig I don't know if I'd justify spending more personally.
If I had a studio or needed specific attributes from the axe-fx (well, just the fx part alone justifies it even before the great though synthetic modelling) or the kemper (it's the damn missing link!!! It's so funny, you click on a preview on rig exchange and you actually sound like the demos on youtube, check out fastredponycars profiles or and44 or ola englund! amazing fun going DI! It should be called sound like your youtube heroes for 1499,99) I'd have to shell out.
But again units like the 11R, maybe an upgraded digitech gsp 1101 than doesn't cost 1600$ (are you listening line6?) or even a pro unit by zoom (as ...oxymoron as that sounds, the g series modelling is in some places even better than the 11R for me) are pretty much more than most of us need in most cases...
Cole I remember (well try to it's been a long time) that they (avid) had made an amp model of their own something like a dg something SLO or modded 800 that was killer and you have to remember that even though the 11R doesn't (should in my oppinion) separate the amp model in preamp and power amp, the master volume for each amp model (not the patch volume or the final master of the unit) is actually a way to have power amp coloration from it. It does make a pretty good difference.
Also yamaha guitars pretty much slay and I remember that every time I look at your avatar.
Thanks for such an in depth post! Generally, I feel the same way about digital modelers. I also own a GSP1101, and while it sounds good for some presets, I personally feel that 11R works better (especially with the few Singtall presets). Stock form, I am not too fond of the presets. They definitely need to be tailored more. If I had the spare cash I would get something like a Kemper or an AxeFx, but right now they are out of the picture. I ultimately would prefer to use a real amp, and own a couple. However, I am away from my primary residence for the next year and the place I am living now just isn't setup for me to bring my tube amps.
I will have to agree with you about the Yamaha guitars, my SG-1000 and SL-700S are fucking outstanding! I have had nice guitars, but these are just incredible!

This is the site I used for presets when I had mine:

I have checked out that site too. There are a few presets that I have liked, while others were just okay. I was blown away by the Singtall sampler pack and really want to get my hands on the full package now. I will continue to use that website though, as I haven't gone through all the presets yet.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, that was my only gripe with it really....mid gain and cleans and the Marshalls are fantastic (even though I rarely use Marshalls or Marshall sims) but the high gain stuff killed it for me, especially since I'm a Recto guy in particular and a Mesa guy in general. The Axe excels at these and that's why it won out, but the 11R is still a quality unit and just bombs all over the Axe for price. If I didn't already have the Fractal I'd own one of these for sure.
EDIT: I follow you on SC Cole; the newest track using this is dope and sounds pretty damn good.
One of the presets in the Singtall sampler is a modified Recto and it is what I used for the rhythm guitar in the track you are talking about. By the way, thanks for the compliment, I appreciate any feedback. I am not the best guitarist or quite as skilled as most on this forum for laying down tracks and capturing amazing sounds, but I try. So feedback of any sort is much welcomed and very much appreciated!
I have never tried the AxeFx, but every time I have heard one live, I am quite astonished by them. Your clips have sounded great, and Mark Day's clips always sound fucking spot on to the stuff he plays. I joke when he posts videos that I am certain he was the studio guitarist back in the day playing all those tracks, just because of how damn good he is and how awesome his sound is.
I am happy with the 11R; and as of right now I am in the state of mind "I don't know miss what I don't know".
Thanks for the posts guys!!!
Cole
