FREE SOFTWARE WRITTEN FOR YOUR RESEARCH PROJECT

Computer Science students in their third year undertake group projects, which are sourced from industry and the University community. As well as traditional Computer Science application domains, past groups have done projects in diverse areas, including archaeology, lactation biology, medical education and conservation biology.

Each group has 5-6 students. Being a second semester unit (CITS3200), projects span a 7 week period from August to October and will have available about 100 person-hours from the group as a whole. While it often happens that the students do a very nice job – indeed, some projects have contributed to publishable outcomes – you have to bear in mind that we cannot promise professional quality software, and projects sometimes fail.

You will need to meet a subgroup of the students a couple times to discuss requirements and comment on prototypes, and later, at the end of the project, to take delivery of the completed system. However, as the unit forms part of their assessment, you will also be asked to evaluate the progress of the project a small number of times along the way by completing a short form. As a guide, the list of the projects on offer last year can be found at: http://undergraduate.csse.uwa.edu.au/units/CITS3200/project/offered/index_14.html

If you would like to propose a project please complete the Project Proposal form which you can find at: http://undergraduate.csse.uwa.edu.au/units/CITS3200/Project_Proposal_Form.doc and email it to: Prof Michael Wise (Michael.Wise@uwa.edu.au). Please have your proposal form submitted by 17 July 2015. Please ensure you have your supervisors approval.

Those taking the opportunity to be involved will experience the rugged Australian outback (it’s not a holiday retreat!) and are asked to turn off their phones for the full five days. The retreat is $495 and is on from 19 to 24 July 2015. For more information head to http://events.uwa.edu.au/event/20150417T052227Z-1036-23986@events.uwa.edu.au/whatson/Law.
