I like Jim Collins’ writing.
I like it a lot.
Because of his profound research endeavours, his words tend to shout off the page with a certain kind of confidence. I mean, why shouldn’t they? He and his team have spent over a decade and millions of dollars to examine why some companies do great and why others fail. They get into the nitty-gritty of the accounting, the industry, the back stories, and even the personas of the leaders themselves. This relentless and objective pursuit of truth is what compels them and they carry us along in their passion.
In his latest release, Collins and his co-author Morten Hansen, espouse with remarkable clarity how some of the greatest leaders have intentionally structured their lives and their organization to succeed. Great By Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck–Why Some Thrive Despite Them All is a book written with precision and transparency. It clearly says what it is and what it isn’t.
And what it is, is the last leadership book you need to read.
Well not really. I tend to exaggerate. But this is a truly excellent book and the truths continue to resound unlike most other books. Since reading it earlier this year, I’ve incorporated a number of the teachings into my life and intend to do more related to his poignant thoughts on discipline. Fanatical discipline to be exact.
