Can you believe I turn 40 this year?

Back in 1976 – looking for a career with room to grow and plenty of variety – I left my banking job to join the exciting world of real estate as a sales agent based in Melbourne’s leafy east.

In 1978 I moved my career to Albert Park, and never left.

Attracted to the work hard play hard culture, and the financial and personal rewards that come from putting in the hours, I immediately enjoyed setting and achieving goals, and helping others achieve their goals.

Within a year, I was hooked.

In 1977 I bought my first home, a house in Port Melbourne. I remember paying $14,000, a lot of money at the time.

Wanting to make my money work hard for me, I decided to use my growing equity to buy another property and, in 1979, bought my first investment property for $18,000 (also in the then-very working class suburb of South Melbourne).

I share my story because I want you to know that all of us begin our property journey somewhere.

We all begin with hopes and dreams, never knowing exactly where we’ll end up but satisfied the real estate market will continue to be the safest place to put our dollars long-term.

Forty years have passed and I cannot imagine another industry more rewarding than the one I have chosen.

This week another 834 properties go to auction across Melbourne. Clearance rates remain steadfastly in the mid-70% range and I feel just as upbeat about the property market outlook in 2016 as I did in 1976.

I sincerely hope you feel the same.
