More than 200 years ago, a handful of Greenwich residents, each subscribing at $6 a share, formed the “Greenwich Town Library.” In 1917, a $1,000 appropriation from the Town of Greenwich began an enduring private/public partnership. Greenwich Library kicked off a celebration of the partnership at a reception on Tuesday, September 6 attended by Library donors as well as local officials including First Selectman Peter J. Tesei and State Rep. Livvy Floren.

Chip Haslun, president of the Greenwich Library Board of Trustees, thanked the assembled group for their support.  “As valued partners, it is your efforts that ensure that Greenwich Library will continue to evolve and meet the outstanding cultural and educational offerings so enjoyed by the entire community,” he said.

Library Director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn said, “The Library enjoys a long history of innovation and service. Its value to our community derives exclusively from this longstanding and critical public/private partnership that began in 1917.”

While the Town’s support meets the core annual operating and maintenance expenses, the Library – long hailed as the “crown jewel” of Greenwich – relies on its generous residents to fund new capital projects and the outstanding programs and services enjoyed by the entire community.

Donations, big and small, to Greenwich Library have an immediate and direct impact, making possible more than 1,000 programs each year.  From story time in the Children’s Room, to concerts, films and author talks in the Cole Auditorium, to rotating art shows in the Flinn Gallery, support from the community enables the Library to maintain the consistently high standards that have earned it multiple 5-Star ratings.
