Chris Nagy, Director of Research and Land Management at Mianus River Gorge, discusses this study of the ecology of the northeastern coyote in the region to help promote understanding and coexistence. Saturday April 9, 6:30-8:30 pm. 2016 Marianne Smith Memorial Lecture: The Story of Homo naledi: From Fossil to Face. John Gurche, paleo-artist, will discuss his facial reconstructions for the new hominid species Homo naledi, recently discovered in South Africa. In keeping with the uplifting message of the exhibition And Still We Rise, representatives from local organizations that identify and work to fix an injustice or a need in the community will be on hand to reach out to volunteers, spread awareness about their cause, and help museum visitors learn how to get involved. Sunday, April 10, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm: “Facing the Human Past” Family Workshop. John Gurche, paleo-artist will speak to families about how he studies hominid fossils and recreates faces above the skeletal structure. Visitors will then be able to create their own facial reconstruction on casts of early human skulls from the Museum’s collection. $7 for members, $15 for non-members. Families will explore the process of making fine art while using quality art-making supplies and discussing current exhibitions. Wednesday, April 20. Bruce Museum Icon Awards in the Arts. The seventh annual Bruce Museum Icon Awards in the Arts honors artists, collectors, dealers, patrons of the arts and more at a cocktail reception and awards ceremony held a private home in Greenwich. This year’s honorees include (list in formation): Richard Armstrong, Museum Professional; Candia Fisher & Emily Fisher Landau, Collectors; Alice Pack Melly, Patron of the Arts; Lucy Mitchell-Innes & David Nash, Art Dealers; Lucy Freeman Sandler and Irving Sandler, Art Historians. Saturday, May 14. Bruce Museum 29th Annual Renaissance Ball. Scheduled to take place at the Greenwich Country Club in Greenwich, the Renaissance Ball will honor Sachiko and Lawrence Goodman for their extensive commitment, leadership and spirited generosity. The gala will be a magical evening featuring the melodic sounds of Starlight Orchestra and inspired décor conceived by Linda Ruderman of Linda Ruderman Interiors and Carolyn Dempsey of Carolyn Dempsey Design. Saturday, May 14. New exhibitions open. Electric Paris and Electricity. Electric Paris illuminates the ways in which artists responded to changing technology in lighting around the turn of the twentieth century in Paris through approximately 50 paintings, prints, photographs, and drawings by such artists as Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Charles Marville, Childe Hassam, and others. Electricity brings the science and history of electricity to life through engaging interactives including Plasma Tubes, Jumping Rings, Solenoid, and Jacob’s Ladder to demonstrate the fundamental principles behind electricity such as magnetic fields, electric charges, resistance and battery technology.
Sunday, May 15, 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Diane Darst Learning to Look® Family Art Appreciation Day. This program is designed especially for families and children to foster appreciation and understanding of art related to current Museum exhibitions and based on the Learning to Look® curriculum developed by Diane W. Darst and Sue Ann Massey Williamson. The lessons will be led by a Learning to Look Instructor beginning at 2:00 pm. There will be a related activity in the Education Workshop following the lesson. All activities are free with Museum admission and are suitable for children aged 5 and up.
Monday, May 16, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Belle Époque Concert: Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra. The Chamber Players will play music from Paris at the turn of the century, including works by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. The event is open to the public. Friday, June 3, 5:00 – 7:45 pm. 2nd annual PHENOMENON: Science Innovation Fair. This scientific competition open to current high school students (grades 9 – 12) in all Greenwich schools highlights the top projects on view to the public from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. (Competition submission deadline, April 15.). Awards ceremony and keynote speech from 7:00 – 7:45 pm. The public is invited to meet the students and learn about their research. Young Greenwich scientists have excelled at state and national science competitions in the past few years, and this event provides an opportunity for the local community to show support for their efforts, see first-hand the innovative work currently being done, and provide inspiration for the next generation of scientists. Dr. Brian Scassellati, Professor of Computer Science, Cognitive Science and Mechanical Engineering; Director, NSF Expedition on Socially Assistive Robotics, Yale University. Socially assistive robotics (SAR) is a new field of robotics that focuses on developing robots capable of assisting users through social interaction. Sunday, June 26, 1:00 – 4:00 pm Seaside Center Grand Opening and Experience the Sound Celebration. The Bruce Museum Seaside Center summer season kicks off with the Greenwich Shelfish Commission’s Experience the Sound celebration providing a festive grand opening. The Seaside Center will be open Tuesday – Sunday, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, from June 26 through Labor Day, September 5, 2016.
The Seaside Center offers daily programs such as fish feeding, shoreline seining, and arts and crafts. Bare feet and bathing suits are welcome. Located in the Foren Family Environmental Center at Innis Arden Cottage, Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich, the Seaside Center welcomes visitors of all ages with five marine aquaria, two shoreline dioramas, and trained naturalists. There is no admission fee to visit the Center, however a beach pass is required to enter the park.
