The playoffs have arrived in Fairfield County and some of the FCIAC’s top athletes have been showing off their talents on the hardwood, ice, mats and tracks this past week. While boys ice hockey and basketball were still battling for playoff positioning, girls basketball started its tournament and the individual sports were competing at the state level.

We found 16 of those athletes worthy of Winter Week 10’s HAN-FCIAC Athlete of the Week nominations. Check out the nominees and vote for your male and female picks below.
Last week’s winners were both from Greenwich: Gymnast Adnerys De Jesus and basketball player Conor Harkins.
This week’s winners (voting is open until Sunday at 11:59 p.m.) will be announced during HAN’s Nutmeg Sports show on Monday, Feb. 29, live at 2 p.m. You can watch Nutmeg Sports with Rob Adams, Donald Eng and Dave Stewart Mondays through Wednesday at 2 at live.HAN.Network.

HAN-FCIAC Male Athlete of the Week nominees
Eric van der Els, Brien McMahon Track & Field
Tyler Gleen won the 600-meter run and anchored Trumbull’s record-setting 4×800 relay team on Saturday, Feb. 20. — Dave Stewart photo
Eric van der Els won the 1,000-meter run in 2:30.55, the 1,600 in 4:21.42 and the 3,200 in 9:29.22 at the State Open Indoor Track and Field Championships to lead the Senators to a second-place finish behind Danbury, 56-50, in New Haven on Feb. 20.
Tyler Gleen, Trumbull Track & Field
Tyler Gleen won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:20.77 and then anchored Trumbull’s 4×800 relay team that set a State Open record with a time of 8:03.89 in New Haven on Feb. 20.
Kevin Remson, Norwalk-McMahon Boys Ice Hockey
Kevin Remson scored five goals as the Norwalk-McMahon co-op team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period and beat Housatonic/Northwestern/Wamogo, 7-5, on Feb. 15. Remson scored three times in the third period, first tying the game at 4-4 and eventually putting the Bears ahead for good at 6-5.
Nick Bozzuto, Greenwich Ice Hockey

Greenwich goalie Nick Bozzuto was widely considered the difference in the Cardinals’ crucial 2-1 win at Darien over the Wave on Monday. His 35 saves, many of them on quality chances, helped to let Greenwich leap over Darien for first in the league.
Charlie Kane, Fairfield Warde Wrestling
Charlie Kane won the 145-pound weight class and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Class LL state championships. The top seed, Kane went 4-0, with two pins and two decisions. One of those decisions was a 5-1 triumph over Newtown’s Edward Lovely in the championship match.
Austin Sherman, Fairfield Ludlowe Wrestling
Austin Sherman claimed a state championship in the 126-pound weight class during the Class L wrestling tournament this weekend. Sherman, the No. 1 seed, won all four of his matches, including a 6-0 win over No. 3 Christopher Sherman of New Milford in the title bout.
Ben LeBlanc, Danbury Wrestling
Ben LeBlanc, a freshman, won the 106-pound championship at the CIAC Class LL tournament this weekend. The No. 3 seed, LeBlanc won his first three matches via first=period pinfalls, including a pin of second-seeded S. White of Norwalk in the semis. In the final, LeBlanc edged No. 1 Matt Ryan of Trumbull 1-0, to take the crown.
Terrell Cunningham, Danbury Track & Field
Tyrell Alexander scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Vikings to their fifth consecutive win last week. — Dave Stewart photo
Terrell Cunningham was part of two winning relays and finished third in the 600-meter run to help the Danbury Hatters claim the State Open championship on Saturday in New Haven. He ran the anchor leg of the 4×400 relay which won in 3:19.14, and ran the third leg of the sprint medley relay, which won in 3:39.92.
Tyrell Alexander, Westhill Boys Basketball
Tyrell Alexander scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Vikings to their fifth consecutive win, 56-55, over the Ludlowe Falcons on Feb. 18. He scored 12 of those points in the fourth quarter, and was 6-of-9 from the free throw line.

Georgia Cassidy, Darien Ice Hockey
Georgia Cassidy has led Darien in scoring since her freshman year. With her two goals in the Wave’s 3-2 win at Hamden on Monday, Cassidy has her 200th point. She has 38 goals, 57 points on the season and is Darien’s all-time scoring leader.
Tiana England, Stamford Basketball
Daja Polk had 12 points, eight assists, and six steals as Fairfield Warde improved to 13-1 with a win over Danbury last week. — Dave Stewart photo
Tiana England scored 16 points to lead No. 2 Stamford to a 51-28 victory over No. 7 Wilton High in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Feb. 20. Nine of England’s points came in the second quarter when the Black Knights outscored the Warriors 19-8 to take a 29-14 lead into the second half.
Daja Polk, Fairfield Warde Basketball
Daja Polk scored 13 points and handed out five assists when No. 1 Warde defeated No. 8 Norwalk High, 54-42, in the FCIAC quarterfinal round on Feb. 20.
Claudia Tucci, Trumbull Basketball
Claudie Tucci scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, leading Trumbull to a 52-34 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe in the FCIAC quarterfinals.
Jessica Camarda, Ridgefield Basketball
Jessica Camarda scored a 19 points as Ridgefield beat Greenwich, 66-40, in the FCIAC quarterfinals. — Scott Mullin photo
Jessica Camarda, a senior point guard, had a game-high 19 points as the Tigers routed Greenwich, 66-40, in the FCIAC quarterfinals. Camarda, who hit four three-pointers, scored 15 of her points in the opening half, leading Ridgefield to a commanding 37-18 lead through two quarters.
Emily Philippides, Greenwich Track & Field
Sophomore Emily Philippides captured a State Open title with a first-place finish in the 600-meter run Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Her time of 1:35.72 edged Tolland’s Julia Sprout (1:36.05) for the top spot.
Asiah Knight, Norwalk Girls Basketball
Asiah Knight scored a game-high 17 points as the Bears defeated St Joseph, 48-44, to clinch the No. 8 seed in the FCIAC girls basketball tournament. Two of her points came with 1:28 remaining and gave Norwalk the lead for good at 45-44.
