Fierce and Fragile: Big Cats in the Art of Robert Dallet
January 10 – March 13, 2016
Hermès, the French brand of luxury goods, and Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, have joined forces with the Bruce Museum to pay homage to the beauty and allure of big cats and to protect their wild populations for generations to come. Their initiative will celebrate the work of wildlife artist Robert Dallet (1923 – 2006), featuring up to 75 of the artist’s paintings, drawings, and sketches illustrating the eight big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, cheetah, cougar, jaguar, snow leopard and clouded leopard. Offering a cross-disciplinary approach that brings together art, design, and science, this exhibition provides a visual framework for a powerful conservation message and highlights Dallet’s two-decade-long design collaboration with Hermès. General admission to the Bruce Museum is free during the run of this exhibition.

New Exhibition. And Still We Rise: Race, Culture, and Visual Conversations
January 16 – April 24, 2016
Story quilting is an art form that expands on traditional textile-arts techniques to record, in fabric, events of personal or historical significance. Through the accessibility of their colors, patterns and symbols, the quilts relate narratives that enable conversations about sensitive topics from our national history, furthering the discussion of racial reconciliation in America. This exhibition is curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi and presented by the Women of Color Quilters Network in partnership withCincinnati Museum Center and National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Supported at the Bruce Museum by The Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund and the Connecticut Office of the Arts.Using the powerful medium of story quilts, this exhibition narrates nearly four centuries of African American history, from the first slave ships to the first African American president and beyond. Through 40 quilts from artists of the Women of Color Quilters Network, the exhibition reveals the stories of freedom’s heroes, ranging from Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Dr. Richard Prum, Director, Franke Program in Science and the Humanities; William Robertson Coe Professor of Ornithology, Yale University; and Head Curator of Vertebrate Zoology, Peabody Museum of Natural History. An evolutionary ornithologist, Dr. Prum leads a new initiative at Yale that aims to foster communication, mutual understanding, collaborative research and teaching among diverse scientific and humanistic disciplines. He has studied many facets of avian biology including sexual selection and mate choice, aesthetic evolution, avian color vision, and structural color in feathers and skin. New Exhibition. Mianus River Gorge: Photographs by William Abranowicz
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of its founding, the Mianus River Gorge organization gave renowned photographer William Abranowicz unrestricted access through all four seasons tocapture the profound beauty and myriad faces of the Gorge. Selected photographs from his experience are on view in the exhibition Mianus River Gorge: Photographs by William Abranowiczand a book of the same name.
William Abranowicz has been a photographer for nearly 40 years. His work is included in public, corporate, and private collections throughout the world.

Wild Reading: Animals in Children’s Book Art

Venture into the wild world of animals and explore their portrayal in children’s book art through
contemporary and historic illustrations from artists including Quentin Blake (illustrator of books by Roald Dahl and others), Eric Carle, and Wendell Minor. Complementing this exhibition are taxidermy examples from the Bruce Museum’s natural history collection, which are paired with their illustrated counterparts. Taking classic James Bond as inspiration, this year’s Renaissance Ball will showcase the elegance for which 007 is known , with a gala event more sophisticated, charming and suave than ever. This year’s Renaissance Ball Co-chairs are Felicity Kostakis and Kamie Lightburn. Honorees, selected for their dedicated, long-standing support of the Bruce Museum, are Sachiko and Lawrence Goodman. The creative teams of Carolyn Dempsey Design and Linda Ruderman Interiors will create a glamourous evening befitting the suave spy himself. The Renaissance Ball is the Bruce Museum’s most important fundraiser, with revenue earmarked to support education and science at the Bruce Museum.
