Theo James is returning to “Underworld,” signing on for the fifth film in the franchise.

The Greek-British actor first appeared in the fourth installment, “Underworld: Awakening,” as a vampire named David. The series of action-horror films center on Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a Death Dealer bent on destroying a group of Lycans who allegedly killed her family.

Though Beckinsale doesn’t plan on reprising her role for the latest in the franchise — rumored to be titled “Underworld: Next Generation” — James will take center stage as the leading character.

A director has yet to be announced. Previous “Underworld” films have been directed by Greek-French industry staple Patrick Tatopoulos, Len Wiseman, Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. The first film, “Underworld,” was released in 2003.

The fifth “Underworld” film is currently in development with casting underway.

James is currently working on “Insurgent,” the follow-up to the hit action/adventure/sci-fi, “Divergent.”
