Out of the Box Intermedia presented for the first time in Athens, a solo booth show by artist Andrea Geyer and her work “Three Chants Modern” curated by Dr. Sozita Goudouna. This work was commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Made possible by MoMA’s Wallis Annenberg Fund for Innovation in Contemporary Art through the Annenberg Foundation.
The booth will also show works that interact with Three Chants Modern by four women artists: Sofia Housou, Aspasia Kouzoupi, Hara Piperidou and Christina Sgouromiti.
How can one rethink time? How can one rethink its form, authority and structure? How can one
consciously recognize ideology and politics as embedded within the organization of time itself?
What would it take to break open the existing structures that hold power over time – to release time by calling on history to reveal itself to us in new ways?
Abby Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Sullivan ( MoMA) , Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Hilla Rebay (Guggenheim) , Helen Clay Frick, Katherine S. Dreier ( Société Anonyme) founded the institutional pillars of Modernism in New York City. Women wrote, painted, curated, organised, drew, danced, sang, protested and raised money. The financially fluent supported those with a cause. They met in and across Salons, exhibitions, on boats out on the Atlantic, in speakeasies, at dinner tables, in bars and on the street. It was their work that allied them across class separations and cultural background. Futurism, Political Reform, Feminism, Cubism, Birth Control, Blues and woman’s right to vote linked them inextricably together in one of the most exciting and creative moments of the 20th century. Yet Three Chants Modern doesn’t simply offer a revisionist history of the Modernist project but an insistence that the tireless work, spirit and convictions that drove these women to create a cross- pollinating and far reaching network across art, politics, education and social reform remains present wherever we closely look today. The works invites to rethink time, to discover it as a non- linear presence and potential that continuously surrounds us.

Out of the Box Intermedia is a non-proft interdisciplinary arts organisation actively committed to the research, development and presentation of location-driven and intermedia projects. The organization aims to promote international exchange of practice and knowledge in the arts (visual and sound art, dance, architecture, theatre), to research on the methods used in theatre and curatorial practices and to investigate points of intersection between the arts and the public sphere by means of interventions, collective actions and educational programmes. Out Of The Box Intermedia was founded in 2008 in London by Sozita Goudouna who has curated intermedia projects in London and Athens in venues such as the Shunt Vaults, Hunterian Museum, French Institute, Barbican Centre, Benaki Museum, Byzantine Museum, Historical Archives Museum, Place-London, Art-Athina 13 and in the public sphere.
OUT OF THE BOX INTERMEDIA also hosts the launch of DIALOGOS. zine at Art Athina 2014. DIALOGOS. is a bimonthly zine that nourishes discussions and collaborations between artists and curators. The word dialogue is the theme. It wants to fusion practices, enhance associations, encourage intersections and nurture new structures of communications. Every issue will be different but personal: it will be the outcome of two people working together. It loves to crosses over disciplines; which is why it intends to come in different forms, colours, shapes and formats. Limited edition.
Issue 1 a/b by Margarita Athanasiou There will be a performance / reading of a narrative dialogue between the writers Margarita Athanasiou and Elena Poughia. The story is a result of a text adventure game played between a computer/narrator and a human/player. Words originally published in February 2014 at Issue 1 a/ which is sold out. Issue 1 /b will be available signed and inscribed with an original artwork by the artist, Margarita Athanasiou. Limited edition of a 100.

A conversation with the artist-economist Georgios Papadopoulos
Short Description: There is common understanding that describes the arts as an autonomous and detached practice, which has very little to do with the economy and money. The motivation of this presentation is to dispel this misconception by referring to three different dimensions of the relation between art and the economy.
Abstract: There is common understanding that describes the arts as an autonomous and detached practice, which has very little to do with the economy and money. The motivation of this presentation is to dispel this misconception by referring to three different dimensions of the relation between art and the economy, starting from the obvious realization that the economy provides the material means for the existence of the arts and the artist, and that the market functions as an important determinant of artistic taste and value. This relation can and should be reversed; artistic production is a prerequisite of economic value, and it is often the arts that offer a surplus of desire and pleasure to the profanity of market interaction through narratives, gestures and objects for subjective and collective identification. A relatively recent development celebrates art not only as a producer of beautiful artifacts, or new tropes for experiencing the world, but also as a system of production of new valuable knowledge. The third filed of exchange between the economy and the arts is research, where economic science and artistic research come together to reflect the new social condition. The presentation will conclude by reflecting on these three dimensions of the relation between art and the economy, drawing concrete conclusions for the conditions of artistic production in Athens.
