ST LOUIS, MO (September 3, 2013) — The law firm of SL Chapman LLC has disbursed $1.25 million from its class action settlement in Shipley et. al., v. CCN Managed Care, Inc. et al, No. 04-L-1055 (Madison County, Illinois) toward Continuing Medical Education (CME). The five recipients of the $1.25 million award are:
1) Southern Illinois University School of Law
2) University of Chicago Center for Continuing Medical Education
3) American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians
4) American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and
5) The Illinois Osteopathic Medical Society
SL Chapman LLC represented a number of healthcare providers in the class action lawsuit, who alleged that two preferred provider networks: (1) CNN Managed Care, Inc. and (2) First Health Group Corporation (n/k/a Coventry), improperly reduced payments in worker’s compensation and automobile insurance injury claims.
The settlement negotiated by SL Chapman LLC, which has been affirmed by an Illinois appellate court, included $1.25 million toward free or low-cost CME programs to class action members.
Each of the five fund recipients will use the award to provide CME activities to doctors, chiropractors and other healthcare providers. The combined efforts between the legal and medical award recipients are intended to benefit the community at large.
