Hi sweet friend!
I hope your day is off to the best start!
Have you ever wished you had a personal stylist who would lay out your outfits for you every day?
Wouldn’t that be amazing? They’d save you time + you’d feel put together no matter what you had going on, plus, you wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not you just wore that outfit.
If you’re stuck in an outfit rut or you’ve tried a bunch of style challenges and are always wanting more, the Outfits app might be what you’re looking for!
I tested Outfits before launch day (today!), and here are 3 short lists to help you decide if you want to give it a try yourself!
The pros.
The cons- plus ways around them.
And 3 specific ways you can use Outfits to grow your style.
First, the pros:
The app is simple, with a clean look, and it’s super easy to use.
If you enable weather and location as you’re setting it up, Outfits will automatically check the weather for you.
And if you enable notifications, it will pop up automatically every morning, reminding you to pick your outfit and even giving you a little encouragement as you start your day! Love!
Every morning, the app will give you 3 outfit ideas. It’s a little like having a stylist lay out 3 options you can pick from! Not a fan of what it gives you? Just reset the daily outfit options in the app settings for new ideas.
Outfits will show you combinations you wouldn’t normally pick to help you stretch your closet further.
The app tracks what you wear most and least, and gives you outfits based on that.
It also helps you avoid wearing the same thing over and over + you can see what you’ve chosen in your log.
Outfits will probably save you time that you can use for something else. I especially love that they encourage you to use that time to make more of the things that matter to you happen!
And at $5/month, Outfits is a lot more budget-friendly than any other style challenges I’ve seen.
Overall, I think it’s a great system you can use to see what you have, stretch yourself to mix and match your closet, and figure out what you could add to make your closet more versatile- especially for the price!
Here’s a peek inside the app.
There were a few things I found challenging. Here are some suggestions you can use to get around them!
The cons:
When you’re setting up your closet, Outfits suggests you not worry about the specifics, but focus on the cut and color to choose your similar pieces. The app’s pieces are mostly neutral, and I have a lot of color and print, so I didn’t feel like my closet was accurately shown. Solution: I picked as many print and color options as possible and less neutral pieces. They aren’t exactly my pieces, so I have to think a little more, but it makes the overall balance better.
If your goal is for all the thought to be taken out of getting dressed every day, Outfits might not be the right choice for you. Because the pieces aren’t exactly like yours, you still have to think some about your outfit + add in your accessories. The outfits are also usually pretty simple, which sometimes can feel boring. The fix: use the pieces you’re given + focus on two style strategies to pull the outfit together and make it feel more polished: the Rule of Three and adding color, texture, pattern, and shine.
If you really enjoy the process of putting together your outfits, you probably won’t use Outfits. Because that’s something I love to do, using the app made me feel like I was stifling my creativity. I also felt like it took me longer to get dressed because I have my own system down already, so thinking about which of my pieces were represented by the app and then completing the outfit took more time and energy. Remember: the goal of systemization is to free you up to do more of what matters, and it’s better to find something that works pretty well and DO it v. wait for the perfect version and never get around to it!
Right now, there are more casual clothing options v. workwear in Outfits. Personally, I wear mostly work clothes, so out of the 3 daily choices, I usually had just 1 option. The quick fix: if it wasn’t a fit for that day, I just refreshed the day’s outfits in the app settings to try again. Keep reading for another option!
Outfits doesn’t teach you why things go together so you can do it yourself. To be fair, I don’t think this is their goal. They want to give you a tool that helps you get dressed faster and save time, and they definitely provide a system that can help you do that!
Thinking about trying Outfits for yourself? Here are 3 specific ways you can use it to grow your style:
Do you struggle more with putting together casual or workwear outfits? Pick only those pieces to fill your Outfits closet so you get more specific outfit ideas.
Is your closet full but you’re afraid to get rid of something because you might need it one day? Outfits will show you what you actually wear. A few months down the road, pull the pieces you’re not wearing + donate or sell them so someone else can love them. Yay for less mental and physical clutter!
Want to know what to add to make your closet more versatile and avoid buying things that just hang in your closet? Use the Discover piece of Outfits to help you spot the holes you can fill to get more outfit ideas- and see the potential options right there!
