The Golden Belt Humane Society in Great Bend announced it has been awarded a $30,000.00 grant from the Petco Foundation. This grant will support its ongoing efforts of spaying and neutering shelter pets, making the shelter pets stay more comfortable, healthier and cleaner by upgrading cat kennels with exhaust systems. Upgrading the flooring throughout the facility is also being provided through this grant.
The Golden Belt Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, to educate and promote the betterment of all animals, and to provide shelter for unclaimed/unwanted animals. Golden Belt Humane Society serves the Great Bend and Barton County community.
Golden Belt Humane Society facilitates and assists with community service projects with Girl and Boy Scouts clubs, and continues working with local trustees from the county jail. Each year, the Great Bend High School participates in the community for a service project. Five to ten students accompanied by an adviser also participate at the shelter with different daily cleaning routines as well as yard work.
In the past four years, the Society has seen a 30-40% increase in adoptions and 20-25% increase of owners claiming their animals.
The Petco Foundation investment will help to replace feline kennels with an exhaust system to lessen the spread of upper respiratory diseases and smells, a bigger area for living, and a private area for litter boxes. This grant will allow the flooring to be replaced with a more durable product for high traffic, easy to clean seamless surface. The floor will brighten the work/living area by 300%, and is a more cost efficient product that lasts for many years. Monies will also be shared with the Adopt a Pet Program to help provide spay/neuter services for cats and dogs who are adoptable through the Golden Belt Humane Society.
