Great American Beer Festival 2016 is in the history books and it will go down as the largest yet, breaking records on multiple levels. In total, there were 286 medals awarded in 96 different beer categories and many relative newcomers walked away with a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal, making this one of the most exciting award ceremonies to date.
Competitive entries in this year’s Great American Beer Festival totaled 7,227, breaking an all- time record and surpassing last year by almost 9 percent. The panel of judges was also the largest on record, with 264 individuals from 12 different countries evaluating these thousands of beers for quality and adherence to style.
Among the beer categories, the one with the most entries was, not surprisingly, American India Pale Ale with 312. It was followed by Imperial India Pale Ale with 211 entries; American Style Strong Pale Ale with 169 entries; Coffee beer with 168 entries; and Wood & Barrel Aged Strong Beer with 159 entries. One interesting thing to note is that American India Pale, while still the most popular beer category, actually witnessed a decline in entries compared to last year when the total was 336. This could be a sign that American IPA is possibly losing its grip on consumer tastes.
