I want to start this post by saying thank you to anyone who emailed me (or commented) on yesterday’s post. I have only written a few personal posts on this blog and I cringe every time I hit “publish”. But then I get the most thoughtful emails saying someone relates to what I have written, and I’m glad my post can somehow help someone else. It’s funny how we can relate to someone we don’t even know. So thanks for being awesome and letting me share parts of my life with you

On to the main post now… I’m living in a new place and it’s a bit of a blank canvas. I’m not sure I’ll be living here more than a year, but I would love to decorate to make the space feel a little more homey. I’m stuck in this space where I don’t want to invest too much in a temporary space, so if you have any tips for how to spruce up a rental property then I’d love to hear them!

Here’s what’s on my to-do list so far:

Living Room: this space is actually pretty much complete but I still need to drill the feet onto my couch. So I need to get a drill. And figure out how to use it. Or find a handyman- which is more than likely what I’ll end up doing. I’d also like to decorate my coffee table with something cool. I’ve started browsing pinterest for that one.

Dining Room: I have a small round table and I’m thinking of getting a rug to go under it. There is a large wall space about my table, and I have a beautiful 16×20 picture frame that would be perfect there. I’d love to find some sort of print related to Virginia Tech or Blacksburg for the frame.

Kitchen: I bought a really pretty rug to go in here but it clashes with my current window treatment. So I’m on the hunt for something new to go on the window.

Guest Bedroom: Let’s just call this room the Hot Mess Express. I’ve unpacked everything but it’s currently housing my bikes, laundry stuff, and office/craft supplies. This room is going to be my office but I’ve got to figure out a way to make it functional for storage as well. My main to-dos in this room are to put together a new desk that I’ve recently purchased, find a window treatment, and decide on some wall décor.

Guest Bathroom: I only use this bathroom to do my hair, but I absolutely hate my current shower curtain. Currently thinking about replacing it with this Kassatex Paisley Curtain (I’ve always wanted a paisley shower curtain and I like the soft colors).

Master Bedroom: So I don’t have a full bedroom set anymore and really didn’t want to buy something nice knowing I was going to move again. I have one of my dressers from basically when I was born, which is white wicker and obviously makes me feel very adult I need to do everything in this room: new dresser, night stand, comforter, and window treatment. My vision for my bedroom is to have lots of white and possibly refinish some old furniture. The only thing I know for sure is that I definitely don’t want to buy a new bedroom set right now.

Things I’m Trying to Keep in Mind

Less is more: my main decorating mistake to date has been trying to cram way too much furniture into small spaces. I feel like less is more this time around, so I’ll definitely be trying to add character by adding texture instead of furniture.

Versatility: need to pick out things that will fit well in a new space if I decide to move next year

Incorporating things I love: when I had my house, it was very neutral. I’d like for this new space to reflect my character with things I currently love… bikes, wine, the color teal, owls, candles, flowers, and the outdoors.

I’d Love Your Thoughts…
