Hello! I’m Roxanne and I blog over at Pen Seb & Rox. I’m thrilled to be part of the Gracious Threads baby shower today. Penelope (aka. Pen) is my June baby and she turns one year tomorrow! Eek!
Sewing for Pen over the past year has been great. With so many free and paid patterns out there I’ve experienced some serious project focusing issues because I want to sew them all. When it comes to free patterns sometimes I can’t complain too much since I did not pay for the pattern and other times I’m delighted by a pattern that is both awesome and FREE. Just look at Pen’s official birthday look (above). I bought more patterns that I’m willing to admit thinking each one would be THE outfit but I settle on Shwin Designs fabulous A Free Summer Tunic pattern. Even though the tunic only comes in one size (about 18 months) I’ve found with shorter elastic the top looks great on even Pen who is still closer to a 12 month range. With a little over a year of sewing for a little girl behind me I’ve decided to compile a list of my personal favorite projects I’ve made for Pen that have a free pattern (or tutorial in a few cases) available.
Clothing
Pattern: Little Geranium

Little Geranium is the simple baby dress and I can see why it is a favorite for many. There is something timeless about a girls dress with no frills. I whipped up 3 before Pen was born expecting her to wear them early on but I found she did not fit them until much closer to the 3 month mark.
Pattern: Tiny Verona Dress

Sizes included: Newborn – 3 month excerpt from original pattern
We tested the full version of the Verona Dress and I can not recommend it enough. Even though the dress is made from woven fabrics I think the elastic casing in the back really makes for a comfortable fit that moves with the wearer. Perfect for babies! The dress is a project that a confident beginner can easily tackle and the results are so cute with the layered skirt, collar, and multiple sleeve options.

I made Basic Leggings for the first time as part of my May The Pattern Exam reviews. Out of the numerous FREE leggings patterns I’ve made since Pen was born, this is hands down my favorite freebie leggings pattern.
Pattern: The PERFECT Diaper Cover

Sizes included: 0-3 to 12-14 months
I made quite a few of The Perfect Diaper Cover before Pen was born and with the super stretchy lingerie elastic I used we’ve been using the same set for Pen’s entire first year. They were a bit big in the beginning and the back rise is a bit low now but we got a ton of mileage out of these!
Accessories
Pattern: Faux Fur Hood

Sizes included: 6-12 months to 9-10 years
I’ll be the first to say that this hood is slightly impractical for kids under a year since they can easily push it off their head but oh man does it look cute for photos!
Pattern: Ribbed Beanie

With a huge range of sizes and so many ideas for options (ears, bow, pompom) I’m really amazed by this freebie beanie pattern! I made a pile of these for Pen to wear during the winter and I’ll be making more in fall.
Tutorial: Leaf Garland Headband

A great alternative to bows, I loved this felt leaf headband I made for Pen during the fall months. She wore it just about every time we went out until she became obsessed with yanking headbands off her little bald head!
Decor
Tutorial: Scrap Fabric Shade

Not to be tooting my own horn but I’m still completely enamored by the shade that I made for Pen’s little nook in our bedroom. Such a great stash busting project and with the right fabric combinations the shade can work anyways from a babies room to your living room.
Tutorial: Sheets to Sheets

Another from my own archives, my second favorite decor project was turning thrifted vintage sheets into crib sheets and changing pad covers. Not only was the project very budget friendly but I thought the gorgeous vintage prints beat the pants off anything I could find at the store!
Reminiscing about what I’ve made for my daughter has been fun. A big congratulations to Jess! I can’t wait to see what she makes over the next year.
