1) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Saur Sujala Yojana in Chhattisgarh.
With this, Chhattisgarh becomes the first state to implement the scheme.It aims at providing solar powered irrigation pumps to farmers at a subsidized price.
Under the scheme, solar powered irrigation pumps of 3HP and 5HP capacity worth 3.5 lakh rupees and 4.5 lakh rupees respectively will be distributed to the farmers by 31 March 2019. The beneficiaries will also get the pumps at the subsidised price.
The Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) will be responsible authority for the installation as well as maintenance of the solar pumping devices to the eligible farmers. Priority will be given in those areas where electricity connection has not reached yet.
2) Indian shuttler Pratul Joshi has won the men’s singles title of the Bahrain International Challenge badminton tournament.
He defeated Aditya Joshi 21-17, 12-21, 21-15. Bahrain International Challenge is an open international badminton tournament in Bahrain. It was established in 2013. The 2016 edition of the tournament was held from 27 October and 30 October 2016.
On the other hand, the women’s singles title went to Sri fatmawati of Indonesia. In the final clash, she defeated compatriot Asty Dwi Widyaningru.
3) Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak has appointed as a Brand Ambassador for Swachh Rail Mission recently.
li>Bindeshwar Pathak is an Indian sociologist and the founder of Sulabh International.He received various national and international awards for his work with this organization.
In June, 2013, he also received the Legend of Planet award from the French senate in Paris, ahead of World Environment Day.
Sulabh has started cleaning and maintenance of five important railway stations from September 2016. These railway stations are Gorakhpur, Old Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Gwalior.
Sulabh International is an India-based social service organization which works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education. Sulabh International has been assigned the task to clean some important railway stations across the country.
Besides, to ensure cleanliness of the tracks, the government is installing bio-toilet at various trains. It has also introduced vaccum-bio-toilet which will be installed in trains.
4) Twitter India Head Rishi Jaitly has resigned from the company.
Jaitly formerly worked at Google India, had joined Twitter in November 2012 to lead the microblogging giant’s expansion to India.He is better known for his stint as the head of Public-Private Partnerships at Google India.
Prior to joining Twitter, he worked at Knight Foundation as Program Director. In 2014, Jaitly took on additional responsibility as Twitter’s Market Director for India and South East Asia, leading the company’s growth and media partnerships across SE Asia.
Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and read short 140-character messages called tweets. It is based in San Francisco and has more than 25 offices around the world.In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and has been described as the SMS of the Internet.
It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. However, the site was officially launched in July 2006.
5) Sarabjit Singh Marwah has became the first Sikh to be appointed to the Canadian Senate.
Marwah is one of the founders of the Sikh Foundation of Canada that promotes Sikh culture and art among the diaspora community.He is among six people from Ontario who have been appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
He was born in Kolkata in 1952. In 2002, he was made the bank’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer.
He has also served on the boards of many famous Canadian institutions such as the Toronto Star, the Toronto International Film Festival, the C.D. Howe Institute, the Royal Ontario Museum, the United Way Campaign and the Hospital for Sick Children.
6) Researchers from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram have developed a gelator to scoop out marine oil spills.
The gelator molecule is partly hydrophilic and partly hydrophobic. The hydrophilic part helps in self-assembling to form gelator fibres, while the hydrophobic part is responsible for its diffusion into oil layer.
They had produced gelators using glucose as a starting material and through several other chemical reactions. Gelator is in a powder form and can be easily applied over oil-water mixture. It does not cause any environmental damage.
Gelator has ability to selectively congeal oil, including crude oil from an oil-water mixture. It makes the process of recovering marine oil spills simple, efficient and cost-effective. It can be recovered oil from oil-water mixture and can be reused several times. But in the case of crude oil, the gelator can’t be recycled.
7) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has presented the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism at a function in New Delhi.
Ramnath Goenka was an Indian newspaper publisher. He launched The Indian Express and created the Indian Express Group with various English and regional language publications.
The honour acknowledges exceptional work across 28 categories in print, broadcast and online journalism in English, Hindi and regional languages.
8) The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has inked MoU with Common Services Centre (CSC) for enabling online submission of applications under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
It will enable online submission of applications by the urban poor for affordable houses under PMAY (Urban). About 60 thousand CSCs located in urban areas will enable online submission of applications at a nominal cost of 25 rupees per application.
CSCs will also facilitate printing of the acknowledgement receipt with beneficiary photograph which helps applicants in tracking application status.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation M Venkaiah Naidu and Union Minister for IT Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Union Government had launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in June 2015 in line with its ambitious Housing for All by 2022 Mission. Under this, government plans to build two crore houses for the poor in urban areas by year 2022, which coincides with 75 years of Independence.
The scheme has four basic components viz. slum rehabilitation, affordable housing, credit linked interest subsidy and beneficiary-led individual house construction or enhancement.
