1) In Karnataka, Indian Institute of Techonogy (IIT) has formally launched by the Union Human Resource Ministry.

IIT-Dharwad is located at Walmi centre on the Dharwad’s outskirts till its permanent campus is built.

It was launched by Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash.

It is spread over the sprawling 470 acres allocated by the state government at nearby Kelgeri town.

Around 2000 students with Science and Maths background have been invited to the inaugural function to sensitise them about the higher learning institute.

2) First time the Scramjet engine test has successfully conducted by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

It was conducted from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotta in Andhra Pradesh. With this, India became only the fourth nation to flight-test a scramjet engine after United States, Russia and China.

The scramjet engine works on the Air-breathing Propulsion System. The system uses natural oxygen present in the atmosphere to burn the fuel stored in the rocket.

The scramjet engine was test launched on board of RH 560 sounding rocket which is two stage Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV). The ATV along with the scramjet engines weighed 3,277 kg at lift-off.The scramjet uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen from the atmospheric air as the oxidiser.

This system would help in reducing the lift-off mass of the vehicle as there will be no need of carrying liquefied oxygen on board the vehicle. In turn help in increasing the energy efficiency of the rocket and also make it cost-effective.

3) NASA’s solar-powered Juno spacecraft has successfully completed its first flyby of Jupiter.

During its first flyby, Juno passed just 4,200 kilometres above the planet’s clouds and travelled at speed of 208,000 kilometres per hour with respect to the planet.It was for the first time Juno had its entire suite of science instruments activated.

There are 35 more close flybys of Jupiter planned during Juno’s mission scheduled to end in February 2018.

Juno is the first solar-powered mission designed by NASA to see beneath Jupiter’s clouds. It had travelled 2.7 billion kilometres since its launch to reach Jupiter.This spacecraft launched on August 5, 2011, from Florida, US. It had arrived at Jupiter on July 4, 2014.

It will have mission life of 20 months from July 2016 to Feb 2018. In its mission life, the spacecraft will circle the Jupiter 37 times before finally making a death plunge in 2018 in order to avoid accidentally crashing onto one of the planet’s moons.

4) Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has won the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix of Formula One.

Belgian Grand Prix 2016 was the thirteenth race of the 2016 season of Formula One in which total 11 teams had participated. The race was run on Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

It was Rosberg’s overall tenth championship title of F1 in his career and the sixth win in the 2016 season.Earlier, he had won Australian Grand Prix, Bahrain Grand Prix, Chinese Grand Prix and Russian Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) of Red Bull was in Second Position while Third Position has achieved by Lewis Hamilton (United Kingdom) of Mercedes Team. Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) of Force India was in Fourth Position and Fifth Position has achieved by Sergio Perez (Italy) of Force India.

5) Shaktikanta Das will lead the Indian delegation to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) finance ministers’ conference.

The conference is scheduled to be held on 25-26 August in Islamabad.

Saarc is a regional inter-governmental organization whose members are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

This conference has started in Pakistan after finance minister Arun Jaitley decided to skip the meeting amid growing tension between the two neighbours.

6) Saina Mirza and Monica Niculescu has won Doubles title at the Connecticut Open.

They defeated the Ukrainian-Taiwanese pair of Kateryna Bondarenko and Chuang Chia-Jung, 7-5, 6-4.

This is their first title together which was held in New Haven, US.

The last time Sania and Niculescu partnered up was in 2010. Sania had recently parted ways with Swiss Martina Hingis after a hugely successful partnership.
