Daily Current Affairs – 15th September 2016

1) The joint military training exercise between India and United States dubbed as “Yudh Abhyas 2016” has begun in Chaubattia in Uttarakhand.

Yudh Abhyas 2016 is one of the longest running joint military training and a major ongoing bilateral defence cooperation endeavours between India and the US.

It is the 12th edition of the joint military exercise hosted alternately by the two countries. The two week (from September 14 to 27) exercise will witness participation of about 225 personnel of Congo Brigade of the Indian Army and similar strength of the US Army.

The purpose of the exercise is to stimulate a scenario where both nations were working together to counter insurgency and counter terrorism (CICT) in mountainous terrain under UN charter.

2) International Day of Democracy was observed on 15 September 2016.

The day provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.

The 2016 theme of the day is based on the United Nations resolution that was adopted in September 2015 by all 193 Member States that is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

It was created by the UN General Assembly through a resolution in 2007 to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy. The theme for the 2015 was ‘Space for Civil Society’.

3) India and Afghanistan has signed an Extradition Treaty to facilitate exchange of wanted terrorists and criminals.

The treaties were signed during Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani’s visit to India. He was on a visit to India from 14-15 September 2016.

The two nations also inked agreements on peaceful uses of outer space and on cooperation on civil and commercial matters.

This agreement was reached in May 2016 with an aim of creating a network of regional connectivity around Iran’s Chahbahar port.

India also extended a one-billion dollar to Afghanistan for capacity and capacity building in areas like empowerment of women, education, skill development, health, energy and others.

4) India Blue has won the inaugural day/night Duleep Trophy Cricket tournament held in Greater Noida.

Ravinder Jadeja, who bagged 5 wickets in the second innings, finished the game with a 10-wicket haul. Cheteshwar Pujara was named the Player of the Match.

India Blue defeated India Red, captained by Yuvraj Singh, by a massive 355 runs.

The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India between teams representing geographical zones of India.The competition is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar.

The 2016–17 Duleep Trophy was the 55th season of the Duleep Trophy.The tournament was contested by three teams, namely India Red, India Blue and India Green.

5) Sushmita Rai has won a bronze medal at the World Martial Arts Masterships 2016.

The World Martial Arts Masterships was the first comprehensive martial arts competition where national teams from across the globe took part.

The competition is considered an Olympics for martial arts with 2073 participants from 87 countries.

Sikkim’s girl has won this medal in the second week of September.It was held at Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea.

Sushmita Rai is an Indian kick boxer.She is trained by Coach B.B.Subba.

6) Indian Railways Men Hockey Team had won the MCC Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament 2016 in Chennai.

Indian Railways Hockey Team defeated Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Team by 2 – 1.

It is for the first time that Indian Railways clinched the title.

Indian Railways takes home the prize money of 5 lakhs rupees, and the runner-up team Indian Oil Corporation receives 2.50 lakhs rupees.

The Madras Cricket Club is one of the premier sports institutions in the country. It organizes major national level tournaments in the disciplines of Tennis, Squash, Cricket, Badminton, Billiards and Hockey.

7) Banco Santander’s Ana Botin has topped the list of  most powerful women based outside the US which has released by the Fortune.

The 2016 list spans 19 countries and is comprised of 16% new names.

Indian’s in the list include top women bankers, namely SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya (2nd rank), ICICI head Chanda Kochhar (5th rank) and Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma (19th rank).

Ana Botin is a resident of Spain and group Executive Chairman of Banco Santander.

8) China has established the world’s longest bullet train network.

China’s high-speed railway(HSR) has completed over 20,000 kms of track network in the country.

The HSR in China refers to any railway in China with commercial train service at the speed of 200 km/h or higher.

The network is part of the network of passenger-dedicated lines (PDLs) in service.

The 360-km line connects high-speed railway in the west with two major north-south lines and helping cut travel time between the west and east.The line has nine stations and trains run at a speed of up to 300 kph in the initial period.

9) The Cycling Federation of India will host third edition of Track Asia Cup 2016 in New Delhi.

India is hosting the 2016 Track Asia Cup cycling competition at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex velodrome in New Delhi.

India would be fielding a strong 29-member contingent in the competition which would see more than 150 athletes participate from 11 other countries including Pakistan.

The event, recognised by the International Cycling Federation, is part of the World Championship qualifier with the points earned here adding up to the ranking of an athlete.

10) Goa tourism department will host the 2016 Vintage Bike and Car Festival.

It is first-of-its-kind Vintage Bikeand Car Festival which will be held on October 1.

In the festival, the vintage two-wheelers and four wheelers dated from 1921 to 1970 will be on display.

The vintage cars such as Chevrolet, Mercedes, Volkswagen and bikes like Norton, BSA and BMW will be centre of attraction in the festival.

11) Ramesh Raskar, an Indian-origin scientist has won the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize.

He is founder of the Camera Culture research group at the MIT Media Lab and an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences. He has more than 75 patents to his name and having written more than 120 reviewed publications.

He has bagged the prestigious 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize worth $ 5 lakh for his groundbreaking inventions to create solutions to improve lives globally.

Raskar is the co-inventor of radical imaging solutions including Femto-photography, an ultra-fast imaging system that can see around corners.

He is also inventor of low-cost eye-care solutions for the developing world and a camera that allows users to read pages of a book without opening the cover.
