1) Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia has become the first Indian to clinch two gold medals at the Paralympics.
Jhajharia’s previous best was 62.15 metres, which he had achieved in the 2004 Games.Now he improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres. He broke his own world record to clinch the medals at the Rio Games.
World No. 1 Chunliang Guo from China won the silver medal in the event and Sri Lanka’s Herath Priyantha grabbed the bronze.
India now has two gold, one silver and one bronze in the ongoing edition of the Paralympics Games.
He is currently being supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Para Champions Programme.
2) Vice Chairman of Samsung electronics Lee Jae-yong will be appointed as a registered executive director on the board.
Lee Jae-yong is a South Korean business magnate and he is referred to as the Crown Prince of Samsung by the South Korean media.
In 2014, he was named the world’s 35th most powerful person and the most powerful Korean by Forbes Magazine’s List of The World’s Most Powerful People along with his father Lee Kun-hee.
The decision was made keeping in mind the urgent need for strategic decision-making on aggressive investments and new growth engines from a long-term perspective.
3) The National Hindi Divas (हिंदी दिवस) is being observed on 14 September every year.
Observance of the day seeks to propagate Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values and also seeks to promote the mother tongue of India and show its importance as a language in the country and the world at large.
The day is also celebrated in the schools, colleges, offices, organizations and other enterprises as a Hindi Diwas with the unique programs and competitions organized related to Hindi poems, story recitations and vocabulary quizzes.
On this occasion, the Rajbhasha awards were instituted by the Department of Official Language of Union Home Ministry to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments and Nationalized Banks in the field of Hindi.
The decision of using Hindi as the official language was ratified by the Constitution of India which came into effect on 26 January 1950. Under the Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi written in Devanagri script was adopted as the official language. But presently, there are 2 official languages: Hindi and English.
4) The third edition of BRICS Urbanisation Forum Meet has started in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
In this edition of conference the delegates from the BRICS nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are participating and they will discuss investments, urbanisation, formation of new cities and others.
The three days conference was be inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union Minister of Urban Development, M. Venkaiah Naidu.
Based on the discussions and deliberations ‘Vizag Declaration’ will be prepared, which will play a vital role in ministers’ conference of BRICS to be held on October 15 and 16, 2016 in Goa.
5) The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and All India Football Federation (AIFF) have jointly launched an online portal for its Global Scouting Programme (GSP).
Under the Global Scouting Programme, boys of Indians living abroad will be able to play in India’s team in FIFA under-17 world cup scheduled in 2017 in different cities of the country.
The portal was launched by Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel in New Delhi. This online portal of GSP will allow applicant have to upload a two minute playing video on the site.
It will provide Indian players who hold valid Indian passport a chance to present his playing talent to the scouts of India’s U-17 team.
6) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal for initiation of the Third Phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).
The TEQIP was launched in 2003 with World Bank assistance as a long term programme to be implemented in three phases.
TEQIP-I commenced in 2003 and ended on March 31st, 2009.It covered 127 institutes across 13 States including 18 Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). TEQIP-II commenced in August 2010 and ended in October, 2016.. It had covered 23 States/Union Territories (UTs) and 191 Institutes.
The project will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme with total project outlay of 3600 crore rupees.
The Focus States in 3rd Phase of TEOIP are 3 Hill States: Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand and 6 Low Income States: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and 8 North-Eastern States which includes seven sisters plus Sikkim. Besides, Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is also focused UT under the 3rd Phase of the Programme.
7) China and Vietnam has agreed to manage their differences over territorial disputes in the South China Sea and safeguard stability.
The agreement was reached after talks between Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Chinese premier Li Keqiang in Beijing. The Chinese Prime Minister is known as Premier.
China is now persuading other claimants – Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei – to settle the disputes bilaterally, without approaching for international arbitration.
Besides, the two leaders also saw the signing of agreements on economy and trade, production capacity, infrastructure and education.
