Bell & Gossett highlights leadership in efficiency at 2017 AHR Expo

e-Series line achieves DOE energy conservation requirements 3+ years early

LAS VEGAS – Bell & Gossett (B&G), a Xylem brand, will showcase its industry-leading line of energy-efficient pumps and technologically advanced drives during the 2017 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR) Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 in Las Vegas. Key highlights include B&G’s DOE-compliant pumps, its new pump selection criteria called Part Load Efficiency Value (PLEV), and a new Online Little Red Schoolhouse course on modern pump selection.

DOE compliance

B&G’s e-Series pumps meet and exceed efficiency benchmarks set forth by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in its new standards for centrifugal pumps, three years before the 2020 compliance date. B&G’s product portfolio for commercial building services applications has the largest Efficiency Islands compared to similar pumps, ensuring systems maintain significantly higher levels of efficiency over a wider range of operating conditions.

“Xylem is the only U.S. manufacturer that currently offers a complete product line that meets the new standards, which benefits our customers who are seeking total system solutions,” said Mark Handzel, Vice President Product Regulatory Affairs and Director, HVAC Commercial Buildings, Americas, Xylem. “These highly efficient pumps not only use less energy — one of the primary goals of the DOE regulations — they also contribute to increased system performance and lower life-cycle costs.”

Introducing PLEV

B&G’s PLEV is a new tool for HVAC system designers to specify the most accurate and efficient centrifugal pumps based on their true performance within a hydronic system. PLEV, which stands for Part Load Efficiency Value, is a calculation based on the partial load that a pump will experience most of the time it’s in operation in a commercial building HVAC system.

“HVAC system designers look for smarter ways to maximize efficiencies while reducing costs,” Handzel said. “By matching the equipment more precisely to actual system demands, pumps will use less power and require less maintenance, extending equipment life and meeting efficiency standards.”

B&G will preview a new Online Little Red Schoolhouse course about modern pump selection in the booth. During the five-module course, students will learn best practices for selecting pumps for hydronic systems based on their true performance, taking into consideration PLEV, the pump performance curve, duty point and the effects of oversizing.

As with all Online Little Red Schoolhouse courses, the new course is free to engineers, designers, contractors, building operators and students, and qualifies for continuing education credits. The complete Online Little Red Schoolhouse curriculum covers centrifugal pump and piping system basics, waterside economization, pressure boosting systems and other trending industry topics.

The Online Little Red Schoolhouse is a complement to the hands-on training that more than 61,000 engineers, contractors and installers have experienced since 1954 at the B&G Little Red Schoolhouse in Morton Grove, Illinois. There, HVAC professionals learn the proper design, installation and maintenance of hydronic systems, as well as the latest technologies and regulations that affect the industry.

B&G product showcase

Products on display in B&G’s booth include:

DOE-compliant pumps

Series e-60 small flex coupled in-line centrifugal pumps – The updated maintenance-free centrifugal pump is the first product in the water handling market equipped with highly efficient electronically commutated motor (ECM) technology. It also contains a B&G patented XL-11® precision-crafted bearing system, advanced fluid passage design and a permanently lubricated motor to guarantee effective and quiet pump operation.

Series e-80SC and ITSC in-line centrifugal pump with a TECHNOLOGIC VFD – Featuring stainless steel impellers and best-in-class hydraulic performance, Series e-80SC sensored and sensorless in-line centrifugal pumps efficiently run across the widest range of operating conditions. All e-80SC models feature a jackscrew design, making it the only in-line pump on the market that is serviceable by one person. The e-80 ITSC sensorless option delivers the reliability of a wired sensor solution in a sensoreless model by utilizing advanced pumping software and proven algorithms. Series e-80 and e-80SC models can be configured with the TECHNOLOGIC variable frequency drive (VFD) that delivers variable speed pumping to control speed, pressure, flow and level over a wide range of hydronic applications.

e-1510 single stage end suction centrifugal pumps – With the largest Efficiency Islands compared to similar pumps, the e-1510 reduces electricity consumption, improves overall system performance and lowers life-cycle costs. It is engineered with cutting-edge computational fluid dynamics design technology, which improves overall system performance.

Other products on display

ecocirc 19-16 “SMART” heating circulator – The new user-friendly speed-controlled heating circulator is equipped with ECM technology to reduce energy consumption by up to 50 percent. The circulator also contains a proportional pressure control that automatically adjusts the pump performance to the requirements of the heating system and step-less speed control to set the pump performance to meet individual system requirements.

TECHNOForce e-HV booster package – The pre-engineered pressure booster package is available with two to four e-SV multistage pumps on a single platform. The pumps are individually isolated to ensure that any pump can be serviced without needing to shut down the system. The booster package contains a direct motor-mounted HYDROVAR® Multi-Master variable speed drive that ensures continued operation if a drive should fail, and enables the system to deliver the exact power needed to meet a specific demand.

ANSI/AHRI Standard 400 certified Series GPX gasketed plate & frame heat exchanger – Its compact innovative plate design, occupying one-third to one-fifth the surface area of conventional shell and tube heat exchangers, ensures a smaller footprint and delivers unparalleled thermal efficiency. GPX heat exchanger models maximize system efficiency, prolong the life of the system and feature ASME Section VIII and Division 1 with U-1 Stamp to indicate compliance with ASHRAE 90.1 efficiency regulations.
